Kenneth McNally's magnificently evocative photographs of the finest of Ireland's field monuments include many of the most famous examples - Newgrange, Glendalough and Legananny - as well as some of the curious and lesser known - Pat Kearney's Big Stone, the enigmatic Caldragh Idol, Ballykinvarga Fort, The Piper's Stones, and many more around which a rich and colourful folklore has grown up over the centuries. The author's introductions to each section set the background to this remarkable heritage, and the commentaries accompanying the photographs tell the reader all he or she needs to know about each particular site, whether as an intending visitor or as a vicarious traveller.

A concise very well written book which is lavishly illustrated throughout with a number of high quality black and white photographs.
The text is divided chronologically into megalithic tombs; stone circles; hillforts, monuments and Ogham stones of the Iron Age; and the continuation of the megalithic tradtion into the period of the early churches and high crosses. Because the cultural development of Ireland wasn't interrupted by a Roman period, the development of early Christian sites forms a fascinating coda to the Iron Age; McNally presents the monuments of this period as part of a smooth transition from the prehistoric to the medieval.
Apart from the descriptions of the monuments, there is a brief resume at the head of each section, but the serious student (as opposed to the sight-seer) will want to read more archaeological background. There is an excellent concise bibliography to help you do just that, although by now (McNally published in 1988) there are new books in the field. Sadly, madly, however, there is no index, only a list of sites at the front. For an excellent survey of every aspect of megalithic structures in Europe try Standing Stones: Stonehenge, Carnac and the World of Megaliths: Carnac, Stonehenge and the World of Megaliths (New Horizons) .
