Product Description

The seven-time Grammy Award-winning international superstar returns to the spotlight with her 2013 album The Standards. With a career spanning over 35 years, having sold over 100 million albums worldwide, Gloria Estefan is one of the best selling musical artists of all time. The Standards reaches out to her global fan base via international song classics sung in English, Spanish, Portuguese and French, some with new lyrics written by Estefan
“I grew up listening to Frank Sinatra, Johnny Mathis, Henry Mancini and great romance recording artists in Mexico and Cuba,” says Havana-born Estefan. “This genre is right up my alley, since music is always a catharsis to me.” Estefan waited until now to do a standards album to get “enough life under my belt,” she says, “since there are so many torch songs requiring life experience to deliver them with proper credibility".
Gloria’s sultry voice perfectly embraces some of the most recognizable and beloved songs from musical eras that span decades. The album also features collaborations with world class, award-winning artists like singer-songwriter Laura Pausini, violinist Joshua Bell and saxophonist Dave Koz.
The Standards is co-produced by Grammy nominated pianist, producer/arranger Shelly Berg (Patti Austen, Elliot Smith and Arturo Sandoval), along with her husband, 19-time Grammy Award-winning producer Emilio Estefan. Estefan approached these standards with fresh ideas. “They Can’t Take That Away From Me” has an Afro-Cuban meets the waltz feel, for Antonio Carlos Jobim’s Brazilian classic “Eu Sei Que Vou Te Amar” she composed English lyrics for the first-ever English version, “It’s You I’ll Always Love,” and also recorded it in Spanish and French.

I bought this CD after watching Gloria Estefan on the BBC One Show - the usual plug for the new CD. I have always liked her work and have several of the earlier albums. This is rather different to her earlier work, much more middle of the road, but so, so listenable. I haven't quite worn it out yet but not far off. Her voice is still as good as it always has been. An excellent CD and well worth adding to my collection.

This is just awful. I have always loved Gloria in all her latin loveliness, and I am a sucker for the Great American Songbook. But her voice just does not suit this genre at all; she was never graced with the most versatile or smooth of instruments, thin and reedy, with little range, projection or vibrato, but these limitations were largely masked by her usual, pop, repertoire, limitations that are now only too cruelly exposed (I would include Janet Jackson, Diana Ross and Jennifer Lopez in this group). The arrangements themselves are a weird combination of avant-garde stylings and syrupy strings, over which she caterwauls away. It seems a common theme recently, where artists probably beyond their sell-by date resort to 'interpreting' the classics/standards, but I wish most of them would just leave well alone. Give me Ella, Billie, Blossom or even Stacey in this repertoire, but please please please NOT THIS.

I saw here preform this album live at the Royal Albert Hall, a very different direction from the conga days. Full of passion and her own way of performing these classics to a high STANDARD. I love her vocal tone and know her range as does she and works it well. A classy album rich and full of passion go buy it.

I am a great Gloria fan and have all her albums and videos and DVDs, both English and Spanish and have seen her live several times performing her usual style of music. This is a complete change for her. The songs are all classics and they are truly great songs but I prefer Gloria singing in her normal style. I don't regret buying the album but it does not go down as one of my favourites.

This is a new direction for the artiste. Yes, plenty of performers look back and this is a stolid collection of The Standards given a fresh delivery. I do not have other Estefan recordings in my collection but am familiar with her earlier and highly successful recordings. It is good that she has done justice to these classics and may well be responsible for introducing them to a new audience. Great arrangements. This is a bargain of a collection so snap it up as it is well worth listening to and more than once.

This album, though consisting of classics of a bygone era, is almost acting as a comeback style recording for Mrs Estefan. It is incredibly smooth, and not done in the sappy style that is very apparent in veteran artists. I've Grown Accustomed To His Face is absolutely gorgeous. She seems to have hit her stride with this album. Welcome back!
