Product description
With the continued popularity of the Ukulele many guitarists are keen to get a slice of the Ukulele action but don’t always fancy learning a whole new set of chord shapes and tuning, This little wonder is a scaled down classical guitar (so has nylon strings) but is the same size as a Ukulele. However the instrument is made to a high standard and features quality woods including a Spruce top and Sapelli back and sides which allow the instrument to produce a surprisingly high quality sound.
For those who are interested the instrument has a scale length of 431mm and the strings use the standard guitar in A tuning. The instrument is supplied in a padded Gig bag

The first thing I'll say is to bin the strings that come with it. I did initially tune it with the supplied strings, but they weren't great. They felt flimsy, and the sound was acceptable but not particularly good. Luckily I was prepared and had bought a better set, and wrapped them up under the tree with the Uke, on the advice of Amazon reviews. I chose D'Addario EJ87S which cost around £5. As soon as you fit them you notice a substantial improvement in the quality of the strings to the touch, but more importantly, a much improved sound. Fitting is a little fiddly, but watch a couple of YouTube videos on the subject and all becomes clear.
The second thing I'll say is to get a decent set of screwdrivers and play around with the machine heads (or tuning keys, if you prefer). The ones on the Uke I bought were a little loose, which caused the strings to go out of tune rather quickly. One of them was a bit too tight, which was causing some vibration, so I adjusted that one too. Although be careful to use a correctly sized screwdriver if you do this, as the screws are cheap and will round easily.
As with many new stinged instruments, you need to allow it some time to bed in a bit, especially if fitting new strings. I downloaded a simple ukulele tuning app onto my phone and tuned it using that. This needs doing a lot at first, but soon enough it settles down and needs doing much less often between playing.
All in all, I'm impressed with the Stagg Ukulele. My partner is very happy with her present, and is working her way through the book, learning some simple songs and chords. And I enjoy playing it myself. It's similar enough to a guitar to be able to use strumming and picking techniques, but in many ways is a totally different experience.
The finish of the uke is good but not great, which is why I've knocked off a star. The one I got had a small chip on the back (nothing major), and overall the finish appears a little plastic (although looking inside you can see the instrument is indeed made of wood). But as a cheap entry level uke it's worth the money. I'm even planning to buy one for myself.
I am really impressed with the workmanship of this ukulele. As indicated by two labels on it, the quality control in the factory is very important to them. This genuinely has a solid spruce top as opposed to being a laminate, and the finish is excellent. The frets could have been smoothed down very slightly more, as they protrude very slightly, but this is much less a problem compared to some ukulele's that I have seen, and a careful buffing with an emery board will sort this out. They certainly do not scratch as in another ukulele that I tried, and perhaps I am being a bit too nit picking on this.
The back seems to be very slightly bowed, a bit like with violins, which, as with some other ukes, helps to project a better sound. In this respect, I was quite amazed at the volume and sound that this uke gives. With the Aquila Nylugut strings on it as standard, (and not needing to replace those supplied on arrival, as can often be the case), this combination must really help greatly. For replacements you need to get Aquila Nylgut Concert Ukulele (ukelele) Strings , but shop around here on Amazon for the best inclusive price.
As most uke players know, at first new strings need patience with a fair bit of re-tuning for a few days when first installed. I was not surprised when I experienced this when the uke arrived. However after stretching the strings, (advice on this can be found in some books and on the web), I have found that they have settled in nicely. I don't think I am going to have to re-tune that much from now on, in common with my experience of Aquila Nylgut stings in the past. This is the first day as well !
I am not sure if the quality of this instrument is due to Norman's setting it up before despatch as some good suppliers do, or if it was set up properly at the factory, but either way, I am most impressed with its standard and can see myself being quite happy with this uke for many years from now, without necessarily wanting to upgrade to something more expensive.
On a final point, the gig bag that this comes in is, like many that come with such instruments, really only a flimsy cheap dust bag, even though it has a carrying handle. To be sure of keeping one's ukulele safe whilst out and about, I would strongly recommend the extra expense of getting a good quality padded gig bag. I have found the Tom and Will cases to be very good with their excellent padding and construction, and would recommend purchasing their Tomandwill 66UKC Concert Ukulele Gig Bag - Black with Navy Trim with Grey and Navy Piping . This has 20mm padding and I like these because the rucksack type straps can be fully removed if not needed, unlike other cases. As others have commmented, whilst not the most expensive, it is not the cheapest, but it is a good investment at a reasonable price.
