This is an update of a previous review of this album. It is a 2 CD live recording of a concert that was recorded and televised (in part) by the BBC around the time that Costello released his album 'All This Useless Beauty'. The tracks on this CD set have been previously released firstly on VHS Video and later on DVD under the title of 'ELVIS COSTELLO LIVE, A CASE FOR SONG' I have had these recordings for some time now and in my opinion they are excellent. A good mix of familiar and unfamiliar EC songs backed by various musicians including 'The Attractions', 'The Brodsky Quartet' and 'The White City Septet'. Also included is a great version of the Beach Boys' 'God Only Knows'. Some of the song titles may be very familiar to you, however most have been radically rearranged on these discs making them very different to their original studio incarnations.
I have recently bought the CD version of this album and it sounds as good as the music on the DVD which is excellent. CD1 is 46.44 minutes, CD2 is 48.39. The discs are housed in a triple gatefold card sleeve with plastic holders, not the best packaging in the world but I have certainly seen worse in much more expensive items. Released on the 'immortal label' not one I am familar with, and manufactured in Europe. All in all a fine addition to Costello's recorded output.

Elvis Costello is and has been for some years our greatest song writer. He gets criticised for ranging from jazz to country, from string quartet to electronica - but he should be praised and prized for that range. Back in the seventies he pointed me towards reggae with his first really big single, and has remained a source of guidance ever since.

This concert - mid-career - is a collection of interesting songs and played in a rich variety of ways. Oddly Accidents will happen and watching the detectives which featured on the TV show - available as a DVD - are not on this disc even though there is room for both between the 2 discs. A minor quibble when gem is followed by gem - 'nonsense prevails, modesty fails, grace and virtue turn into stupidity..etc' this is poetry. Start buying and listening and do not stop.

This is the CD of a very old DVD which has only got better with age.
Elvis features the Brodskey quartet in a few songs which are greatly improved on the original versions.
Well worth the money and good value for anyone new to Elvis Costello's music
