Product Description

For fans of: Neutral Milk Hotel, Battle. // Press quotes: "Husky soulful vocals and a mixture of lazy, hazy-day summer songs, bursts of heart-string yanking nostalgia and slow bittersweet melodies." NME // "A new album is building buzz on music blogs for its upbeat sound and wistful lyrics Wall Street Journal // Brief biog: Returning after a hiatus, following the release of the bands second album Secrets of the witching hour (which defined legendary status as the first big album to be given away free), the band are set to return this summer with a slot at 2000 Trees festival, a headline show at The Jazz Café in London (more dates to come) and most-importantly the release of a new double album Square Moon . Based around the lovelorn lyrics of Davey McManus, Square Moon is a dazzling technicolour tour de force through woozy pop, ragged folk and desolate piano led tracks best exemplified by the track LAST PLANE OUT OF SAIGON, which was released as a free download to a chorus of approval back in April. With the music industry being radically reshaped by the internet (remember those days), The Crimea were among the first to see the potential and opportunities afforded by this fresh new landscape. Six months before Radiohead and Prince, the band decided to release their second album, Secrets Of The Witching Hour, as a free download in 2007. 100,000 downloads in three days resulted in a huge worldwide news story that included interviews on Channel 4 News, The Wall Street Journal and The Hindu Times. At the end of the year, Q Magazine labelled the move as one of the top 5 moments that changed music history. Now they re back, and better than ever. I managed to get Square Moon a couple of years ago when there was a very limited run of a vinyl and MP3 set. It's not hyperbole to say it's become one of my favourite albums (the play counts on my ipod can attest to that).

Why do I like it?

1. There's so much lyrical depth. On several tracks, singer Davey MacManus has a knack of making a heartbreaking phrase sound knowingly naive, with vivid imagery and pop culture metaphors painting a vivid picture of longing and wanting to belong. He is "drunk at the wheel of the Mary Celeste" and "Robinson Crusoe". Elsewhere, it sounds like he might have found his place - "I'll always be your Milky Bar kid, your desert island disc" he sings in Millionaire. The lyrics on their own warrant repeat listens.

2. It's a pop/rock album, yet it's not. Some songs may not seem so initially, but I guarantee that repeat listens see them stuck in your head for days. You get more out of them with each listen.

3. The piano lines are great. It's the album's lead instrument, and many songs have little classical flourishes and inventive lines that set this album apart from other pop/rock artists.

4. Im my opinion, it's an album of two parts and I generally listen to it that way. The first half is more acoustic guitar based, while electric guitar creeps into the second. Why is this a plus point? You're getting two albums for the price of one!

The Crimea have called it a day with Square Moon, due to Davey's honourable work setting up an orphanage in South Africa. It's a perfect swan song. Recommended.

Quite simply, beautiful double LP. Comes from the most criminally ignored band ever! Super on record, superb live. This is the bands last hoorah before splitting so a must for anyone who has been lucky enough to have experienced their music. Great to see talented, thoughtful and poetic bands in 2013. There are so few and sadly will be one less! The singer Davey is off to South Africa to work as a nurse in an orphanage. This band will be sadly missed but this album is delicious.
