Good fun but fails to live up to full potential
on 4 March 2014
First of all, Thief is good fun. There's a decent enough storyline in the game, which keeps the game flowing. It's not as story-driven as something like an RPG, but then it doesn't set out to be.
The gameplay itself is largely free running and stealth, which is an interesting concept. I would say it's things like this though, that result in the game not fulfilling its potential. The free running is not as free-flowing as Assassin's Creed, and therefore feels a little stilted by comparison. Equally, the stealth is not as interesting as Dishonored or Deus Ex, and therefore again by comparison doesn't feel as suspenseful.
None of the above stops the game from being enjoyable, it just comes across as unsure what it's trying to do. There are some fun new mechanics such as water and fire arrows, and the takedowns are enjoyable.
Obvious on next-gen it looks decent, and I wouldn't get too concerned about the frame rate debate - arguably it might look better on PS4 (I couldn't say) but it certainly looks great on Xbox One.
Definitely one to buy, and I enjoyed playing it, but it lacks the certain something to take it into the truly great category.
