Spun into Gold is a book about a life – a fascinating, absorbing and honest story of Romany – born into a world that demanded sparkles and feathers, sequins and music, joy and hope. Romany is the person who can provide that. The problem is that Romany has a constant companion. A sly, devious, evil and insidious companion, who never leaves her and will always be there, ready to undermine her - prepared to destroy her body and soul. This book tells that story, and so much more. We share her journey, cheering from the wings as she receives her richly deserved accolades, and wanting to rush over and console her when life pulls the rug from under her feet – something it does with unfailing regularity. However, Romany proves the point that, it doesn’t matter how often you get knocked down, it’s the ability to get back up again that wins the day. Real magic! Any reader will eagerly await Spun Into Gold 2, I’m sure.
Oh that feeling of coming to the end of a wonderful book and wanting to start it all over again ... and tell everybody else to read it so I can vicariously share their pleasure? Listen up! Spun Into Gold is utterly delicious ... inspiring ... laugh out loud funny ... gob-smacking ... relateable to ... magical ... authentic ... heart-breaking ... thought provoking ... real ... and beautifully written. I wish I'd written it myself - though of course I couldn't because I'm not a Magician and I haven't had a fraction of Romany's fabulous adventures. I do, though, believe deeply in magic and am committed to my beloved 'wafty bo***cks'. And Romany's tale, a magical balancing act between grounded ordinary and off the scale bonkers, is a testament to both. Looking for something to read this summer? Look no further. (You'll thank me 💙)
This is beautifully written and in parts brutally honest account of a life-long sometime magical adventure, a high flying commercial career stopped short then a truly magical transformation over several years into the diva of magic that she is today. For every tentative step forward, there is a dozen reasons why it shouldn't work, but somehow be it luck, sheer hard work, inspiration or masterclass tuition from some of the words leading doyens of magic (and in passing a lifting of several veils at mystical campfire retreats) she travels relentlessly on, falling in and out of love in the process. Its an honest account, digging deep into her psychic alter ego.
The book should be required reading for anyone filled with the slightest hint of self-doubt, or unsure how to cope with life. There are valuable lessons to be learned within these pages.
For those lucky readers, who are content with life and love, this is also for them as the delight of the narrative style will carry the reader along on a mystical series of romantic sub plots. It is truly hard to put down so be prepared for a long but exhillarating read. I am amazed this is self published on Amazon, when any self respecting major publishing house should be beating down her door to secure a contract for the follow up. And perhaps Ridley Scott should have his people busy securing the film rights? Just remember you read it here first! Romany, a true diva, and not just magic it goes much deeper
Romany’s book is an incredible rollercoaster; hard struggle, determination, incredible adventures, laugh out loud funny and many revelations and reminders as to how real magic works and what living your life purpose - and not living it - is like. The book is woven through with glimpses into Romany's struggle with Bulimia, she is open and honest about it. I'm sure anyone struggling with the condition, or any other struggle with self-harming behaviour will find it insightful and useful. However, the book is not 'about' Bulimia, and she demonstrates that she has refused to be beaten or held back by it, and it's just one of the many threads of the story. It’s one of those books you just cant put down - it meant a couple of late nights for me. Her style is unique, a great story teller, some great one-liners and with really funny asides to the reader that make you feel like she's in the room with you. When you've read it - you will have at least one friend that you have to buy it for - as I did, and I think it is going to be very popular with book clubs because there is so much of interest to discuss... my only criticism of the book is that it wasn't longer - but there's always the chance of a sequel to find out what happens after the book is published.
The first thing to note is that she writes so well - and also that she has an entertaining and heartwarming story to tell. From a high flying business career that seemed to define her life, to her realization that this didn't have to be her truth, this inspirational book is about discovering how to live dreams with success. What also strikes me is the sheer willpower Romany has, and the rare power to take deeply life changing decisions with no fear - what a woman! I appreciate that she does not expose any magic secrets, which is the right thing to do, but still manages to show the delight, intricacy, thoughtfulness and dedication that marks out a real magician and allow non-magicians an insight into this world. I can't wait for volume two, a great read.
Having purchased this book a little while back I was looking forward to reading it on holiday, and did so in two sittings. It would have been one if looking after my elderly mum hadn’t of got in the way.
The one word that leaps out of every page is ‘honesty’. Romany has been remarkably candid in many private matters especially her struggles with various aspects of her life. Some parts are extremely sad, I had a real lump in my throat in chapter 25.
As professional magicians we hear the golden rules preached often, namely... 1. Entertain, don’t just show them how clever you are. 2. It is not the trick, it is how it is performed. 3. Be yourself, not a copy of someone else, and 4. Practice until you can do it as second nature.
Romany added another which I believe is very important to any inspiring performer in any art....INVEST in yourself. Romany makes it clear that no one can know it all, especially at the start of their careers. They don’t even know what they don’t know. Romany explains how she sort out the best teachers in the world and paid handsomely to study, with them as a guide. It takes time, lots of money and a huge amount of effort. Most aren’t prepared to invest in any of them, Romany has, and that explains why she is a multi award winning act and I don’t mean they won their local magic clubs competition, these are top international awards and lots of them. She works the luxury cruise liners, in fact these cruise liners bend over backwards, break their own rules and spend huge amounts of cash to get her. Romany has performed for royalty at home and abroad and is now a leading international act. The rewards of lots of hard work, time and money invested in herself. This book explains exactly how she did it.
There are some weird bits which wouldn’t have attracted me, but they all go to make up the person Romany has become.
It is beautifully written and very easy to read.
Romany, thank you for taking the time to share your story, I’ve only given this book 5* because I can give it 6.
Wow! This is such an inspiring book as well as being very joyful! It was amazing to see how honest Romany was throughout the text which meant that we got the ups and downs of her journey to success - and hopefully there is more to come. It was a great testament to how women can enter and flourish in areas of life which have traditionally been male! Well done Romany - looking forward to the next ten years! Lizzie.
This is an inspiring story of continued grit and determination. The takeaway for me is to never give up and never underestimate the importance of those around you who will inspire and support your dreams. I flew through this and would highly recommend it to anyone wanting to reach their goals, especially in the world of performance, or who just wants to get their teeth into a great story.
An interesting and honest biography by Romany, the Diva of Magic charting her ups and downs as she chose to become a professional magician. Her sheer determination to move forward against many odds is inspiring. There are many funny stories and a few tragic ones as well. She deserves all her success given how hard she has worked in many ways to achieve it.
It’s a book like no other that I have at read. At one level it is about an exotic, bohemian, unbelievable and yet credible live style. It is a style of life totally alien to how I believe many of us (or at least I) live from day to day. It cuts into conservative (with a small ‘c’) certainties and priorities and reveals to the reader an eye opening and wondrous glimpse into another world. The author is at once engaging and irritating and who also makes monumental decisions which at times are difficult to accept or understand. On the other level this is a story of overcoming all the many odds and achieving fabulous goals. If you have ever dreamed of doing something different, special, achieving your heart’s desire and need some guidance, help and support then this is a book for you. It is well written, inspirational and spiritually uplifting.
