This book is one of series of 4 and this review is really a summary of all four. I was introduced to "spud" while holidaying in the author's homeland of South Africa. I read the first book and could not put it down - I literally laughed til my sides hurt to the bemusement of my family. The book certainly revived my interest in reading books.

Have purchased and read all four now and the laughs (and some sadness) continue throughout the series. As some have already said, you will either love them or hate them but if you do love them you really will love them.

as Simon Cowell might say "I didn't like them - I loved them!"

Funny, heart wrenching and overall excellent, this book is a resounding success as a sequel. Perfect for anyone of any age, it made me feel very nostalgic...even though I'm not South African and I didn't go to a boarding school!

This follows John's second year at school with even more hilarious exploits that, perhaps, would appeal more to ex-boarders than anyone else. All the usual suspects are there (except Gecko of course) & life for John continues to be full of surprises & not always pleasant ones. I thought the first book was excellent but this one made me laugh even more.

The second in the series, the madness continues unabated in this brilliant book. I nearly had it confiscated by my wife, as I kept on bursting into uncontrollable laughter (Not unlike Vern!) as I lay in bed reading. John Van Der Ruit has managed to blend heart-warming, tear-jerking realism with comedy to create a truly wonderful read.

I just love these books. For those who have read the first, and I think it is best to read these in order, the second is even better. Written as the diary of a young lad as he progresses through secondary school.

All the characters are so well drawn and believable, the Diarist, Spud, who is a Boarder at an elite South African private secondary school for boys , is so likeable. There really is nothing negative to say about this book. I am an adult and I thoroughly enjoyed both of them and am eager to read the rest of the series.

Brilliant, light entertainment with its poignant parts, for teens and adults alike. Not so suitable for those under 11 years of age due to some naughty bits though, although parental guidance would always be the best judge of that!

This book is amazingly good and I would recommend anyone who has read the first book to read this one and if you haven't read the first one you should have. It has all the characters you loved from the first book(apart from gecko) and also some new and interesting ones. The plot is interesting and imaginative and even better than the first book.

Following SPUD.... I found the second book a tad less exciting than the first - perhaps because SPUD was SOOOO good - yet reading "the madness continues.." I had moments of laughing so much that I was literally rolling on the floor. Once again John van de Ruit is brilliant in depicting the life of an 'almost' marginalised boy and his 'almost' dysfunctional family. Hopefully there will be a third - this will be a collectors piece in the future.
