What a cracking album from ex add N 2 xer Ann Shenton. This Won't be an album for those who like simply structured songs, verse-chorus etc, but for those who like their music served up with a little thought and attention.
It contains 14 stunning tracks that take you from electronic travel on other planets to country electronica. The only way to appreciate this album is to buy it and listen, it's an eerie at times, awkward experience that challenges the senses for all die hard Add N to X fans.

The split of Add N to (X) wasn't the happiest of times for all concerned. It was a passionate mess, a split from the heart rather than the cold legal or internal political wrangles that give reason for most bands that split. That's because ANT(X) really truly believed in what they were doing - that, and a frenetic lifestyle eventually took its toll...
Missives were fired across the bows of one member to another; they said she was mad, she said they were evil; he said, she said etc etc...
Ann disappeared - where? 'She's selling plastic frogs at craft fairs in Berkshire!', She's living in a tent!' - the rumour mill started, fuelling the myths; Ann Shenton had gone barking in Berkshire...
The legends and myths had to surrender to a truth eventually however; and here it is - and what a beautiful, sweet, kaleidoscopic thing it is too.
'Spray On Sound' is Ann's first outing as Large Number and the first significant outing from any ex-member of ANT(X). It's also been released (alongside several singles and the 'Electronic Bible' compilation) on her own record label...so she can't be that mad then.
In places it sounds like a healing is going on but not in any 'tortured artist' kind of way; bitchy fun can be found poking at an old friend in 'Lexical Synesthesia', Love goes blind and walks into walls on the electro-country twang of 'Crazy', which, in an alternate world is the No.1 summer single of all time.
It's a roots album too; yes it's got the analogue noise that ANT(X) were famous for but this time it has Delia Derbyshire/Bruce Haak inspired playfulness, Daphne Oram's subtlety and banjo's...yes banjo's, and harmonicas, percussion and anything else she could lay her hands on (as the album was recorded in a barn - that also includes chickens and a sheepdog).

This album is a rare gem, original, witty yet beautifully musical.
The combination of electronica and real instruments keeps everything grounded and there are strong songs to keep structure amongst the whimsy.

I was seriously bummed to hear Add broke up, because it was "my band." Of course, when I realized this new stuff had been out for about a year I was very excited.
I can explain the disc like this: Check the Add albums' covers and see which songs Shenton has the credits for. Spray on sound is all Shenton songs, so it was like I expected, actually. What did surprise me, though, was how totally all-over-the-place things are, much more than even On The Wires Of Our Nerves. Some tracks are less than :30.
Songs like "Crazy" and "Pink Jazz" totally stand up to the likes of "Pink Light" (one of my favorites). These are more like doses than tracks, and there's going to be good vibes, so shell out the paper stuff. This record is quite fulfilling.

I'm very happy I stumbled upon this fine gem.I had no idea ADD N TO X broke up, I had no idea they hated eachother, or that Ann had put out this album. All news to me.
Ann Shenton, the founding member of ADD N TO (X) is awesome.
The songs are like some ADD N TO (X) , but different. There is more vocals on this album. This album not just analogue synths. There are banjos, harpsichord, casio, and others....
Ann also looks super sexy w/ her sonic ray gun, in the sleeve.
BUY this album if you are, or aren't a fan of ADD N TO (X)
