"The Spook and the Spirit in the Stone" is a combination of SF setting on a colonised world and police procedural around the kidnapping of the 9-year-old daughter of an Earth diplomat. The story is told from the PoV of a local detective, Jerome, not entirely human and just reassigned from Fraud to Homicide division to work with Afton, a difficult to work with detective inspector. The characterisation, particularly the relationship between Jerome and Afton and Jerome and the kidnapped girl, work very well. Add into the mix an extremely unpleasant kidnapper and equally unpleasant Terran agent with psy-powers (the spook of the title) plus a nasty underground guardian (the spirit, a near-fantasy element) and what sounds like quite a mish-mash of genres actually works remarkably well. The story moves briskly and with good touches of humour to leaven the, at times, distressing tale of the kidnapping of young girls. I would estimate this is novella length and I believe (and hope) this is the first of a series of "Jerome & Afton" stories. I will certainly be looking out for more. This story is professionally written and produced and very good value.

The Spook and the Spirit in the stone is the perfect combination of scific and crime novel with just a touch of the mystic. The effect is a completely satisfiying read.

While we're on a planet somewhere far away, with beings from even more distant planets with unusual skills, this is largely the story of a missing child, and those who find her. Our hero has his own problems, physical, mental, and emotional, so the move from Fraud to Murder could not have been at a worse time, especially since he's going to be working for a woman everyone else considers poison. Then, the niece of the Terran President is abducted, and a new batch of pressures are added to the mix. The finding of the child, the escape from their prison, their encounter with the Spirit in the Stone are full of tension - and some very emotional moments, which ring true.

It may not be a long tale (approximately 66 pages), but every page is exceptionally well-written, and I really would love this to be the test run for a series of other stories involving the same characters. They're brilliantly drawn, and it would be such a shame to waste them, when there's so much more to be discovered about them all - well, with the possible exception of both the Spook (who was self-serving, dishonourable, and a pain) and the Spirit in the Stone (who was scary).

This lady writes great stories. So very readable. Easy on the internal ear. I read this after reading a short story in a charity vampire story collection which was also a pleasure. I look forward to reading more of her stuff.
