It's wonderful (and surprising) to hear how Stevie Smith's poems should be read - and in some cases sung! Apparently it took years to undo the performance style that others created for her. You can truly appreciate her talent and wit in this recording.

There are 50 poems on the CD, which includes previously unreleased recitals, 'Croft' being of the shortest duration (0.18) and 'Angel Boley' (6.08) being the longest. The broadcasting dates range from 1956 -1966. Unfortunately, the sound quality varies, as does the volume, which I found irritating. And this is reflected in my rating.

It's great to hear Stevie Smith introducing and reading a selection of her poetry. The recording is surprisingly clear. This CD is an absolute must for anyone who's enjoyed Ms Smith's poems on the printed page.

5.0 out of 5 stars bring back "Stevie"! 3 May 2014

One of my favorite contemporary British poets (contemporary if you are my age!). She makes Philip Larkin look like a veritable Tinkerbelle! An awesome movie about her life with Glenda Jackson has all but vanished from the shelves. It should be brought back for the millions who love slam. Waving or drowning? Really. This disc preserves, in the poets own often caustic voice, her classics. Thank goodness it, too, isn't a rarity.
