Some of the best writing I have ever encountered in my life

Beryl Markham's writing reminds me of Norman Maclean's, author of the novella from which the movie "A River Runs Through It" was made. Both write in a style that is spare, evocative and bordering on poetry. It's that beautiful. There is the controversy that she did not write "West with the Night" without help, a theory in which I don't believe for a moment. A collection of her short stories was published after her death in a volume entitled "The Splendid Outcast." The two books are so similar in style and phrasing. Once I read Lovell's biography and considered how she lived her life it just doesn't seem possible to me that she would pass something off as her's when it wasn't. Reading Beryl Markham soothes my soul.

She was a special author. Ernest Hemingway compared his own writing unfavorably to hers. Very compelling literature.
Enjoyable to read.

Enjoyable to read. But it seemed to be written by several different authors as the "voice" was different in each chapter

Memorable yarns, colorful characters, vivid settings. Not all perfect, but thoroughly enjoyable. I highly recommend this collection of stories for fanciers of horse stories.
