I'm in love with a mermaid! read the opening line of Leonard Maltin's original review for Splash. And with the delightful Darryl Hannah in the lead, who could fault Maltin for his public declaration of ardor? The story begins in 1959, when a young boy is rescued from a watery grave by an adolescent mermaid. Twenty-five years later, the boy has grown up--and lo and behold, it's Tom Hanks. Meanwhile, the mermaid, likewise grown up, has surfaced in search of Hanks, her long-lost love. On dry land, the mermaid is able to walk about on legs; any contact with salt water, and she reverts to her half-fish form. Adopting the name of Madison from a New York street sign, the girl manages to win Hanks' heart. Alas, a secret government lab, populated by such smarmy types as Richard B. Shull and Eugene Levy, captures Madison for research purposes--and possible vivisection. Egged on by his brother John Candy, Hanks rescues his beloved, joining her in the ocean depths as a mer-man (mer-fellow? mer-guy?) A captivating confection from the peerless creative team of director Ron Howard and screenwriters Lowell Ganz and Babaloo Mandel, Splash was a winner all the way--especially at the box office, where the $11 million film racked up a huge profit. Historical sidebar: Splash was the first release from Disney's Touchstone Pictures division.~ Hal Erickson, All Movie Guide

I remember seeing this movie AT THE MOVIES - yes I'm THAT old !!

It was showing on the television one Sunday afternoon and my daughter was entranced! She kicked and screamed up a fuss when the ads came on. She just stared and stared at Daryl Hannah (ie Madison) so I thought I'd look around to see if it was on DVD. I thought I'd find in bargain bins at local department stores but to no avail. When I saw it here on Amazon.uk and at such a cheap price, I snapped it up.

I'm very happy with the price and it was delivered in next to no time at all.

Suffice to say, this movie is my daughter's obsession! She has now developed a love of all things mermaid.

And a note to any parents - this movie is perfect for young children. There are no sex scenes, no swearing, no violence. It's just a really fun movie with some sad bits and happy bits complete with a happy ending.

A lovely film that my 3 year old daughter watches again and again and again.

This had been my favourite movie when I was younger, I have been telling my daughter, 4, all about the mermaid (she loves mermaids) and told her about how Madison says her name in Mermaid language and all the tvs shatter, she really wanted to see the movie so I bought it, we've watched it a few times, she loves this movie as much as I do, Daryl Hannah and Tom Hanks are just perfect for this movie, it always brings a tear to my eye when Madison is 'discovered to be a mermaid'. The movie takes you on highs, slight lows, laughter, you can really be taken away within this movie, go with it and enjoy, it's brilliant and a must-see-movie for everyone. Some of the scenes where the mermaid is swimming about in the sea are so lovely and you can believe she's a real mermaid, her tail looks the part and she plays the part beautifully. You also get to see the auditions of Daryl and Tom in bonus features which is nice to see.

Hugely entertaining film about a mermaid and a young New Yorker who fall in love. There's lots of comedy value in the 'life viewed through the eyes of an alien' aspect. There's also a surprisingly poignant element: the 'message' that you should be with the one you love, however 'different' they might be. Being a 1984 film, it has the same look, feel, New York setting and music styles as other feel-good films from this time – such as Ghostbusters. In fact, you can almost imagine Bill Murray acting the Tom Hanks part. Best of all is the wide-eyed innocence of Daryl Hannah as the beautiful mermaid with the unpronouncable name (she speaks it once and the high-pitched noise she makes shatters the glass of all the TV screens in the department store). This film is a lot of fun, but it makes you think too. I enjoyed it even more on DVD in 2016 than I did at the cinema when it first came out. Plus, the ending is superb.

Such a fantastic movie, and a favorite from my childhood. Everyone in this movie is amazing and there are so many funny moments... John Candy is especially hilarious. And it goes without saying that Daryl Hannah is stunning (I was always fascinated by those hips of hers, too) and it's pretty awesome to see so much of her, if you get my drift. Speaking of which, Blu-ray brings out A LOT OF DETAIL that even the dvd didn't reveal... and that's quite thrilling. Actually I'm kind of amazed this is PG and the nudity isn't even mentioned (but maybe that's a good thing in an otherwise stiflingly puritan Hollywood where it's ok to show gratuitous violence but one nipple and people freak).

The other thing that's awesome in this movie is all the scenery, both the shots of NYC and also all the underwater stuff (really gorgeous sea life and lots of Hannah swimming through). Again, Blu-ray gets us that close () to the original film quality and it's beautiful.

Alas, the only negative I noticed on my Blu-ray player is that the A-B loop function is disabled, and so is the zoom function. But lots of Blu-rays seem to do that these days, the zoom is somehow mapped to the scene selection function which is a bit frustrating.

HIGHLY RECOMMENDED!!

I don't want to go over the top in reiterating what a great piece of cinema this is from a writing, casting and direction point of view. Many other reviewers have summed up what makes this film special, the sweet romance, the gentle humour and great writing and direction.
Disney's first foray into grownup films (bare bums and snogging) is still enjoyable despite it taking its time to get to grown up Madison.

What I do want to point out is that despite it being a film older than myself and a bog standard DVD edition it is really quite a good transfer and quality copy, admittedly it's not frame by frame restored bluray HD resolution, but it's not fizzing and fuzzing like some other cheap transfers which can evoke migraines. This is worth the purchase alone as so many treasured films of mine have been rendered barely watchable through a bodged transfer from VHS to DVD by the studios rushing out DVD titles from their libraries.

This DVD is well worth its outstandingly cheap price (at the time of purchase), as it couples a really good DVD quality image with a fantastic film that stands the test of time even with its 80s technology and fashion!
