Format: Hardcover
Length: 1:46 Mins
Terrific and beautiful book. Finally, a book on the best of the best watercolour paintings!

The Spash series of watercolour artbooks has featured lots of great works since the first volume was published in 1991. This year, they released volume 14 as well as this retrospective artbook. So the selection of works inside are from the first 13 volumes.

This book has 224 pages, thicker than the standalone Splash series. The presentation format is similar to the series with the paintings printed on large pages.

Over 200 artists are represented. There are lots of amazing artworks featured. It's quite incredible to see what some artists can do with the medium. Realistic, splashy, suggestive or even abstract.

The categories included are still life, portraits, figures, abstracts, machines, landscapes, animals, flowers, interiors, city scenes and water scenes.

Every painting included has insightful commentary by the artist on the piece, as well as comments from author Rachel Rubin Wolf.

Highly recommended to lovers of the watercolour medium.

5.0 out of 5 stars Watercolor Masterpieces on Display! 22 Nov. 2013
By Mike O'Connor - Published on Amazon.com
Format: Hardcover
Rachel Wolf's SPLASH RETROSPECTIVE is a truly wonderous collection of top-notch watercolor paintings sure to enchant artwork lovers. Culled from the previous 14 SPLASH annuals, it showcases over 230 artworks, literally 'the best of the best.'

Over 200 artists are featured in SPLASH RETROSPECTIVE, the book offering page after page of gorgeous, striking, affecting, inspiring artwork along with commentaries and reflections by the artist and Wolf. Among the artists included are Frances Miller, Michael Weber, Diane Halley, Sueellen Ross, Lewis Lowe, James Toogood, Susan Stuller, James Asher, Laurin McCracken, Marguerite Chadwick-Juner, Mark Collins, Lian Quan Zhen and Edmond Oliveros. The artwork is arranged in sections on Still Life, Portraits, Landscapes, Animals, Figures, Abstracts, Machines, City Scenes, etc.

Among my favorites are "Prospecting London' by William McAllister, 'The Apartment' by Sharon Maczko and 'Hope' by Paul McCormack.

SPLASH RETROSPECTIVE is one of those books that you can read from cover to cover or just jump in at a random page and marvel at the talent on parade. The watercolors in Wolf's book are truly breathtaking and the book is a delight. Highly recommended.

The Splash series has been around since 1990. Wow, that's a really long history. For all those of you who've never heard of the series; Splash is an international watercolour competition by North Light Books. The winners for each year's competition will have their works published in a Splash book. Splash Retrospective is a book with a compilation of the best of the best from the past winners. I think that was what drew me to buy it.

The works are gorgeous and varied, and I enjoyed reading the little captions that were paired beside most of the paintings. The book itself felt sturdy, and the pages were well designed and well printed. It was an utter joy flipping through this book.
5.0 out of 5 stars Definitely for the watercolor lover 31 May 2016

Excellent collection of truly inspiring watercolors with comments by both artist and the editor / reviewer of the work. I have purchased older annual editions after going through this retrospective. So many idea producing images. If you use watercolors to paint or just enjoy the absolute beauty of well done watercolor paintings, you will want this volume.
5.0 out of 5 stars The artistry is amazing. I very much appreciated the artists' words 24 Jun. 2016

Wow, wow, wow. The artistry is amazing. I very much appreciated the artists' words, whether they be about technique or inspiration. I also enjoyed reading about why Rachel chose to include specific paintings in the collection.
