Product Description

The complete series 1-7 of the groundbreaking 1980s satirical puppet show. No target was safe from the series' gunsights: Margaret Thatcher and her cabinet, the opposition, the Liberals, Ronald Reagan, the Pope and the Royal Family could all find themselves up for a painful ribbing on any given programme. The series was worked around the current week's news stories and featured a number of famous impressionists, including Chris Barrie, Rory Bremner, Phil Cornwell, Steve Coogan, John Culshaw, Harry Enfield and Kate Robbins.

This show was one of the great ages of satire, a kind of political grown-up version of the Muppets. Politicians, film stars, singers, the Royal Family and many others in the public eye are represented here in latex puppet form. Included are a terrifying Thatcher, a terminally confused Reagan, a leather-clad Norman Tebbit, a Tory cabinet full of the likes of sex-mad Cecil Parkinson, self-obsessed Jeffrey Archer, creepy Norman Fowler and bumbling Nigel Lawson. The Labour party also make regular appearances with Neil "the windbag" Kinnock and a spitting Roy Hattersley. There's also the Two Davids (Owen and Steel). As well as the puppets there are stop-motion sequences, including send-ups of things like Trumpton and take-offs of well-known fairy tales.

The show is written, vocalised and produced by some of the most talented people on British television (just look at the end credits of any of these episodes. It's like "spot the person who's now famous"). Harry Enfield, Ben Elton, Rory Bremner, Grant & Naylor, Ian Hislop, Chris Barrie and many others all helped make this show a success. The politicians in these 1980s series may have changed, but so many of the jokes are still relevant today. This box set features all the Spitting Image TV episodes from 1984 to 1989. There's no sign of the specials, but this set is still an absolute goldmine of satire and well worth the money.

So much genius for so little money. Unless "you were there", you're unlikely to get the best out of this box set. For those of us who grew up to Spitting Image, the cold war, the westland affair, miners riots, wapping, and Thatcher, then this box set is a gateway to the peculiar but visionary talent assembled for the creation of a TV series which will never be made again (by the producer's own admission). Spitting Image as a vehicle spawned so many careers, yet is often overlooked (probably because it was topical satire).

If you remember the news stories, then the content therein is still fresh and you will be transported back in time as you watch. If you don't remember or are too young to remember, then there are still extremely amusing nuggets of comedy there - and in fact some of my favourite sketches were borne of pure silliness. "Now, every time I say 'kangaroo', you HEAR 'kangaroo'".

Very very pleasing indeed. And I still pronounce it "your anus", not "ooh rannus".

Spitting Image never gets old its still one of the most funniest shows ever to be seen on british television its a timeless piece of comedy.

The box set covers series one to seven not sure why they chose not to add series eight I would have preferred a complete collection of spitting image. I have to say I'm not impressed by the quality of the picture it looks as if you were watching a video not a dvd I think they could have done a much better job with improving the quality of the picture I have to say I'm disappointed with it.

Always wanted to see this again as I was in my teens when it was shown and it was so hilarious at the time. Much of it is still funny, but a lot of it has lost it's humour as it's long since ceased to be relevant. Today's youngsters wouldn't really get it as most of the politicians and others are gone from public life. A blast from the past but nothing to get excited about now unfortunately. Still has some real classic sketches like Thatcher ordering from the menu with her Cabinet around her, and the waitress asking "What about the vegetables?" to which Thatcher replies "Oh they'll have the same as me"

About time one of the most sort after shows to find its way on to dvd. Shame theres no specials or behind the scenes docs on here fans of the show know they exists. Oh well lets hope they emerge in the future on other releases. B.t.w series 8,9 and 10 (series 11 out in june). 18 series were made.

I had forgotten how grainy the 'older' tv shows looked. Some jokes were funny, others I feel you'd need to have experienced the occasion they related to. A fun step back in time. Lots still to watch. Almost makes me want to have this type of comedy reintroduced to take the mickey of current 'celebrities.'
