This excellent little book was first produced in Holland during the 17th century at a time when a number of similar books treating the same sad condition in Christians was also appearing in England. These included Robert Bolton's 'Afflicted Consciences' (1626),Joseph Symonds' masterly 'The Case and Cure of a Deserted Soul' (1638)and Timothy Rogers' mature coverage in 'Trouble of Mind and the Disease of Melancholy'(1691) - see Amazon for details.
'Spiritual Desertion', the title, is the name we give to the bitter and often protracted experience of Christians when, for whatever reason, they forfeit the fuller awareness of God and the inward experience of divine grace they once enjoyed; when they feel themselves spiritually abandonned. As such, this book, is designed to advise, to clarify and above all to encourage believers in such a trying situation. And it certainly makes its mark!
This English translation was freshly produced in 2003 and is very clear. The text itself is made up of two separate discussions, each by a theologian in the Dutch Reformed tradition. Both bring to bear an immense amount of pastoral experience and reflection; the second of these by Johannes Hoornbeek is particularly helpful and undoubtedly earns for it the right to be called a classic of its kind.
I recommend this book most highly as an absolute 'must' for anyone who wishes to know more about this subject and come to an informed and sympathetic understanding of it.
