About the Author

Adrian (Ade) Hawkins lives in Norwich, England, with his loving, ever-patient wife and two beastilicious moggies. He discovered a talent for storytelling in high school, despite not getting an English GCSE. He realised he had a yearning to write while drawing cartoon robots in art class, spending most of his time pondering the story behind them. After getting stuck on a story idea for several years, he wrote a trilogy of screenplays called Dark Nemesis. They were mostly bad but punctuated by surprisingly good bits. He then spent 12 years being overwhelmed by his own ambition and spent far too long faffing about with conceptual ideas before finally coming up with an idea for a novella that then evolved into his debut novel. His favourite authors include Douglas Adams, JRR Tolkien, GRR Martin, Terry Pratchett, Ian Fleming and Rob Grant and Doug Naylor. He should also watch less movies and read more books.

There is only one word that comes to mind to describe the world and characters A J (Ade) has created in the first novel of his Spirits and Shards series. AMAZING. I was hooked from the beginning and found it difficult to stop to do things like eating and sleeping. I had a difficult time writing my review without giving too much of the wonderful story away. The novel is set in the world of Silandrius in the year 25032. I found myself taking note of every difference this world had to offer. The calculation of time, the transportation, and the beauty of a secret underground garden in the middle of the city just to name a few. But within this world that the author has created is a story of love, struggle, and loss so relevant to the world and life we as readers live in. Jerin is a creative, hardworking man, who due to an accident and the debilitaing effects this has had on his health, is struggling to rediscover himself, his sanity, and the reason he and his live in girlfriend, Juli have fallen in love. Juli also finds herself dealing with the effects Jerin's accident and financial hardship has had on their relationship. They struggle every month to make ends meet and find themselves going through the motions and living almost separate lives full of secrets that strain their bond. I found myself realizing how important it is to slow down and appreciate what I have. Stress and hardship will test your relationships, resolve, and your meaning in life. But ultimately we must look past all of this to remember the love and the beauty. I thank A J for introducing me to this world and can't wait to lose myself in the next book.

This story of love, both at it's best and disappointing, is told in a way that makes it feel real. Pain of failures, miscommunication of emotions, doubts of decisions made and paths taken bring a depth to this relationship that actually brought tears to my eyes. This is not a conventional love story. There is no perfect hero to ride his love off into the sunset. However, the story was still touching.

The setting was interesting, but at times distracting. I simply focused on the relationship, the mysteries being solved through dreams and flashbacks, and some interesting imagery.

English author and I love the spelling and language differences, as I lived in the country for a number of years. Just note, the words are spelled correctly in "English."

I enjoyed the masculine feel to the romance. As a woman who reads and writes romance, I enjoyed the lack of sighs and lingering glances as a change of pace, There is also a feeling of frustration and rage that was unique. I enjoyed this first work by this new author. His voice is fresh, different, and a little dark. I look forward to other works by A J Hawkins.

A J Hawkin's debut novel is the first of a series of novels set in the fictional world of Silandrius. A world not too disimilar too our own but with a few differences.

This first novel follows the the ultimately doomed relationship of Jerin and Juli, a young couple who find themselves crippled with debt and living hand to mouth in order to survive. The main focus of the story concerns Jerin who is unwittingly used as a guinea pig for a new wonder drug to treat his crippling headaches. These capsules however are not all they seem and Jerin ultimately pays a high price.

As a debut novel it is a very strong book. It is very well written and unlike some novels set in alternative realitys doesn't disappear up its own backside. It is a very bleak novel but why should the reader be given a happy ending? Sometimes lifes not like that.

"Falling". Without wanting to give away too much of the story line, you could class this as a love story, but it's not your normal type of love story, this is a tale of struggle, hardship, and darkness. This is A.J Hawkins debut novel, a good plot that will keep you guessing throughout. Come the end of the book, you realise that the journey is far from over, and so it begins. An enjoyable read. Looking forward to the next "Spirit and Shards" instalment.

f you like romance, gritty life stories and futuristic novels then you will love this book. The characters are so normal that you can really relate to them, the daily struggles they face are all so
similar with both work, friendships and love.
