I'm enjoying reading this book, but it's not what I was expecting. If you're looking for a yoga manual with detailed information about postures etc, this isn't the book for you (I've found Dynamic Yoga (devereux) to be pretty good for that).
However, it's great if you're interested in the background/history/philosophy of yoga. The photos are lovely (dead glam) and it's certainly very readable.
In the synopsis, the book is described as a "beautiful and unique introduction to yoga for those becoming interested in the discipline for the first time and a source of inspiration for those who have already made it a part of their lives." - as a newcomer to yoga, it definitely lives up to this promise for me.
I think that this would be a lovely gift for anyone already interested in yoga.

This is a lovely, beautiful book and one which is unique in that it is not so much a "How To" manual of yoga postures, but rather a rich and detailed reading book on the history and philosophy of yoga. Yoga is so much more than simply bending yourself into impossible positions-there are already many excellent books on how to do this, however, this book shows you the rest. Fantastically illustrated with beautiful colour photograhs throughout, it is a treasure trove of interesting and inspiring information about yoga, and really seems to capture the essence of what yoga is all about.
Having been practising yoga for a while now, and having many books covering the physical postures, I found this book to be refreshing and just thing I was looking for in order to learn more about this ancient and wonderful discipline. I think this book would suit a person who already had some knowledge of, or had been practising yoga already, as a complete beginner may well be a little overwhelmed, if they are not aware of what to expect from a book such as this. For example the "yoga grapevine" which shows all the forms of yoga and their teachers in a kind of map spread across two pages is great as you can see how the various different styles of yoga all map into the big picture, but a beginner may become confused by this and wonder where it is they are meant to start exactly.
However, this is a stunning book, and essential reading for anyone serious about yoga.

Having been interested in yoga for the last four years I was delighted to finally find a book that wasn't just an instruction manual for the various asanas. Don't get me wrong, we all need those, but this book is something different. It is highly informative about how yoga has progressed throughout the centuries to the present day "western form". It is visually stunning with beautiful fluid pictures of both postures and other related items. I found it the one book I kept coming back to, always being inspired and have my interest renewed to find out more theory behind the subject.
I would say a must buy for anyone wanting more than just a postures manual, and a fantastic book to grace any coffee table/ bedroom etc....

A really lovely book to have on your bookshelf. Not good for knowing the technicalities of poses, but nice overview of yoga and modern perspectives on yoga. I wasn't going to buy any more yoga books(as i have so many) but ended up buying this one! I'm pleased I did...It has lovely pictures too.

4.0 out of 5 stars As inspirational as it is beautiful... 28 Jan. 2003
By S. L. Thornton - Published on
Format: Hardcover
I'm always a little suspicious when I see a book like this one, which, by all appearances, appears to be cashing in on the yoga-as-fitness-trend phenomenon. So I was when I received this book as a birthday gift. But Kathy Phillips has given us a thing of beauty in "The Spirit of Yoga." A long-time practitioner and teacher, Phillips questions this trend, while acknowledging her own contribution to it. After reading this qualification, I devoured every page. Phillips gives a rich, if brief, history and description of the various paths of yoga practice, as well as gorgeous visuals and instructions on the poses basic to many yoga styles. Chapters on breathing and meditation help to complete what are for many practitioners the fundmental physical aspects of yoga. I've only been practicing for two years, and I try to maintain a balanced approach to what I see as blatant attempts at unnecessary or useless materialism that doesn't seem true to the aims of yoga. This book is definitely indulgent eye-candy, but in the best way - clean, beautiful layout and design, excellent photography and visuals that are respectful of the tradition. I would recommend "The Spirit of Yoga" both to anyone curious about beginning a yoga practice, as well as to any seasoned practioner who can take the time to read past its obvious coffee-table function!

4.0 out of 5 stars A great insight of Yoga history and its meaning. 12 Nov. 2002
By Allyson - Published on
Format: Hardcover
This is a beautiful book to look at, but the author uses lots of celebrity names and past gurus, which pronouncing their 15 letter names I found to be quite distracting. However, if you are looking for a book that gives the meaning and origin of the poses that are used in everyday yoga class this is for you. Overall, I found the book to be filled with answers when it comes to sorting out all the different types of yoga and helping me to decide which practice is for me.

The packaging was above and beyond expectations or the norm. I so appreciate the consideration re this delivery. There was a lovely personal note from the book source. Alas, I saved it to personally direct my thanks. When I retrieve it from its safe haven, I will do so. I gave my previous very old copy to a friend as a retirement gift. I truly missed it. Now it has become a gift to me, thanks to Amazon and the considerate book source,
