Product description

Product Description

This new release sees an exciting collaboration between two up and coming vocal ensembles in the European choral scene. Both international award-winning groups tour widely in the UK, Europe, the USA and Asia, combining performances on the concert platform with more intimate venues ranging from jazz clubs to Festivals. The five outstanding vocalists of British group, Apollo5, are hugely versatile performers and delight audiences with engaging shows on the concert platform, singing repertoire ranging from renaissance, classical and contemporary choral music to folk, jazz and pop. Slovenian group, Ingenium Ensemble are highly regarded throughout Europe as specialists in renaissance music who also champion the music of young contemporary Slovenian composers. With their focus on presenting rarely performed and unknown works, Ingenium was the perfect choice to pair with Apollo5 in presenting this previously un-recorded masterpiece of renaissance music. Working together for the first time, these young singers have brought to life music buried and forgotten for nearly 500 years, despite being written by the greatest composer of that age. Josquin Des Prez is perhaps the only Renaissance composer other than Palestrina guaranteed to sell CDs, a Catholic composer so good that even Martin Luther loved his music, the subject of the first early music revival of the 20th century with his own complete edition long before we had even heard more than a handful of his contemporaries, and the subject of as much scholarly work as virtually all other renaissance composers put together. Josquin s masses except this one have been frequently recorded. A complete discography would list at least 110 recordings of his 18 mass settings, including around two-dozen of his most distinctive, the Pange lingua. Complete CD cycles have been begun by the Tallis Scholars in the UK, and by A Sei Voci and (separately) Ensemble Métamorphoses in France, though none plan to include the mass on this CD. Two dozen recordings of Josquin s last mass, the Pange lingua, reflect the directness and appeal of his late style to modern audiences. Yet the Quem dicunt homines mass, written in a similar direct and appealing late style, has never been recorded, even though it will attract the same audiences as this most successful of Josquin masses. While scholars have even rejected the music as too modern for Josquin, this CD aims to set the record straight and allow this very attractive music to be heard & judged not by a small group of scholars, but by anyone interested in whether this music stands alongside the Pange lingua mass as a towering late masterpiece of this great composer. Recorded in the beautiful acoustic of the Gresham Centre, St Anne & St Agnes Church, London itself a Grade I listed masterpiece of Christopher Wren s design by the team behind VOCES8, this CD has already garnered praise from Sid Nuncius, Amazon #1 Hall of Fame reviewer specialising in early music: I like your recording very much. The overall sound is lovely - I'm a bit of a sucker for that resonant (but not over-resonant) acoustic which makes the basses in particular really ring. Classy singing, too: faultless intonation, very nicely balanced and blended and with a lovely fluency of line.

A stunning, beautiful sound --BBC Radio 2

If after listening anyone says that perfection does not exist, then I do not know what could be better than that --Heraldo de Aragón
