Can't quite believe how much is going on on this album! It seems to contain influences of every kind of music you can think of, from rock to rap to pop to soul to indie to world beats. It is essentially a dance/hip-hop affair throughout, but with such stellar contributors as Talking Heads' David Byrne, RZA, George Clinton, Kanye West, John Frusciante from the Red Hot Chili Peppers and the immortal Tom Waits, the breadth of scope and the quality of the songs is tremendous.

Every track is underscored by rock-solid beats and (usually) a rapped verse (albeit tuneful), leading into catchy hooks at the chorus, funky basslines and all manner of overdubbed sound effects, segues and links.

But it's the quality that shines through: Every song brings a new angle to the beats, every one is thumping, melodic and catchy. The Tom Waits performance is particularly strong - he bursts into the song at the first chorus like a clap of thunder and proceeds to rasp and sneer his way through two further verses. Just stunningly good! - he should do a whole album like this.

Even the packaging is top notch. In short, the best album I've found this year.

Format: Audio CD
The incredible lineup of artists contributing to The Spirit of Apollo is its strength and its weakness. The appearance of two or three distinct guests on each track means each song has a distinct flavour and motif. But stretching this concept over a whole album has the effect of diluting each singer's voice. While individual songs make sense, the album overall becomes fragmented and somewhat meaningless. Its like the difference between a smoothie and straight juice. Both taste great and are good for you. But in a smoothie the individual fruit flavours get subsumed in the whole. Its still good, but harder to put your finger on what's special about each ingredient.

An album full of great singles then. And in today's world of playlists this is maybe no bad thing. But the whole record, well, it might be great for parties as background music, but probably not one you'll listen to on a loop too many times.

The quality of the CD and accompanying booklet were faultless and the distribution time was fair. I however was slightly disappointed that all the plastic bits on the spindle that keep the CD in place were all snapped of and missing from the box.

I dont know whether this was due to a mechanical error or human error, but I however must mention that I did not report this to the distributer and so have give them an opportunity to offer a replacement. As it did not affect the way the CD plays I wasn't too bothered about this though.

A unique collection and twist on traditional hip hop. Spank rock have an influence here and it definately shows. Recommended

5.0 out of 5 stars great CD, diverse, creative, unique 22 July 2010

Ignore what some review sites say(like Pitchfork), this CD is awesome. The amount of great artists crammed onto this CD is awesome. Admittedly some of the tracks aren't that great but they can't overshadow the brilliance of this record. This CD will make those who do not ordinarily like hip hop, R&B, and rap into converts. The Spirit Of Apollo shows us all how great music can be if artists don't make songs so that they'll be #1 hits and played constantly on the radio. This is pure expression distilled into great beats and lyrics. Don't hesitate to buy it. This is a truly special album.
4.0 out of 5 stars Mostly catchy hip-hop 3 Feb. 2013

I'm not a big hip-hop fan so just the fact that I was able to enjoy this album shows how good it is. It starts off strong with some amazing back and forth rhymes and David Byrne hook on The People Tree but then gets less and less interesting as the album goes on, finishing with a 15 minute slog known as the NASA Anthem. Buy it for the first half.
5.0 out of 5 stars All around fantastic 5 Jun. 2014

Great album, with phenomenal new cuts from MIA, Kanye West, Santigold, Jurassic 5, George Clinton, Tom Waits, and others. The CD itself is reminiscent of old vinyl records in that it gives you multiple extra pictures and mini-posters.
4.0 out of 5 stars Interesting project 19 Oct. 2009

This is the first cd I bought this year after reading an article in a national newspaper. The chemistry between then is undeniable and the collabos r great, all of them fits perfectly. On the other hand there's a couple of beats that didn't sound good but overall it's an interesting project plus the art cover is really beautiful.
