no spoilers on plot beyond basics...discs are available in Australia/NZ.(Region 4). Discs are in French with English subtitles. A different plot from series 1, occuring some time after series 1, with the same principal characters and several new ones. Several seemingly random events are (not surprisingly) linked, although this takes several episodes. The primary plot is about drug trafficking, seen both from the traffickers and the police/courts perspectives. There is a parallel plot that distracts the police for a while. It's all nicely juggled, with dramatic cliffhangers on each episode. Absolutely a joy to watch, hard to stop between episodes.
Highly recommended BUT WATCH SERIES 1 FIRST.

The first series of Engrenages was absolutely fantastic, and I would second all the positive comments that have been written about it.

However, a word of warning to anyone planning to buy the second series - I was really eager to do so after having enjoyed the first one so much. I don't know why it hasn't been released in the UK yet, and the Australian release is not sufficiently subtitled to follow unless you are fluent in French (I'm supposedly 'intermediate', and I still struggled)

We bought one copy that was sent from Australia, sat down to watch it, and were disappointed to see that only about half of the lines were translated into English subtitles. So we returned that. In hope that maybe we'd been duped with a pirate copy, we tried another, but the situation was exactly the same.

Has anyone else had this experience? Or has anyone managed to get a copy of the second series with full subtitling?!

Didn't know what to expect when first viewing this on the BBC but was caught up in the plot straight away. I speak French but my wife who doesn't has said that the subtitles were good and unobtrusive.I know its out of sync but buying series 1 now. Great viewing, but beware the subtitles are as explicit as the spoken word. Great !!!!!

Recently shown on BBC Four Spiral season 2 features many of the same characters from the first seasonSpiral - Series 1 [DVD] [2004] , also shown on BBC Four (which unfortunately I missed ) This excellent French drama follows the police case against a drug trafficking criminal gang but centres as much on the politics and manoeuvring in the criminal courts as it does on the actual machinations of the police investigation.
It has been compared to the peerless American TV series The The Wire: Complete HBO Season 1-5 [DVD] [2002] and with good reason. Spiral like the HBO series credits the viewer with respect and no little trust , allowing them to work out the myriad plot strands without resorting to bludgeoning them over the head with exposition and signposting important plot developments. It also allows the viewer to observe developments from multifaceted perspectives , so things are shown from the point of view of the criminals as well the police and lawyers, although sometimes theses are one and the same.
As well as being extremely well written ( Cristina Arellano, Laurent Burtin, Alexandra Clert, Laurence Diaz and Guy-Patrick Sainderichin are all given credits ) it is also very well acted. And in Caroline Proust who plays the driven Police Captain Laure Berthaud they have uncovered a real star. Effortlessly sexy ,even though shorn of make up and with a hairstyle that would could be best described as through hedge backwards Proust gives the Captain real energy and drive but still retains a twinkle and sultry feminity.

I thought the first series of this series was pretty good and the first few episodes of the second seemed to follow the same pattern of one major crime investigation supplemented with a unique case with each episode. Here, this tendency is dispensed with allowing the story to develop in a more complicated and fascinating manner. For me, this is a big improvement as I thought that the first series went out of it's way to shock and be controversial and the sub-plots distracted from the fascinating main storyline which ultimately was not fully resolved. Whilst this formula remained true for the first couple of episodes, eventaully the main plot takes precedence and what is essentially an investigation into a drug gang related murder goes into overdrive. There are some elements in this series which don't seem true (the tower block resident picking up the police surveillance on his satillite TV, for example!) but the main characters remain from the first series and remain just as compromised and comolicated as before. I particularly like the fiesty and sexy woman police officer, Laure who is prepared to break the law in order to get the criminals to justice and is supported by a team who are more like Keystone Cops on some occasions. Added tension is added with a new character who goes undercover and whose loyalty is questioned up until the very end.

Whilst the first series was pretty compelling, this was even better and the excitement comes so thick and fast with the protagonists all bound up in plot and counter-plot. The storyline becomes engrossing within a couple of episodes but the conclusion ratchets up the tension several notches until it reaches the explosive and breath-taking conclusion which vears excitingly towards disaster.....
