Product description

Product Description

When the mutilated body of a young woman is found on a disused railway track in the North of Paris, Police Captain Laure Berthaud seizes the opportunity to restore a tarnished reputation and leads her squad on the hunt for what she believes to be a deranged serial killer. However, with her personal life in tatters and a potential rift emerging from within her own ranks, Berthaud's world is on the verge of disintegration.

Meanwhile the impeccable career of Public Prosecutor Pierre Clément falls into disrepute when his insistence on integrity makes him a pariah in the corridors of justice and ambitious barrister Joséphine Karlsson attempts to untangle herself from some dubious associations--with dangerous consequences.

Great series but a bit seedy for my taste.

This is as brilliant as the first two series. We once, long, long ago, saw crime drama of this calibre produced for British television - remember 'Prime Suspect'? Lynda La Plante should be remembered for creating the first - the very first - feisty female detective. You almost feel she should be mentioned in the credits given the French, and the Danes, have now hitched a ride on that particular band-wagon. Nonetheless, Spiral is a consummate achievement. Tight, bright and it certainly gives you a fright, Spiral does not, on the face of it, inspire confidence in the judicial system of La Belle France. Then again, they're all so stylish across the Channel they are well able to cope with the fall-out. Encore, s'il vous plait, encore!
Of course there English subtitles for those who speak nothing but English but it would have been nice to have the option of French ones as well for us deaf who are trying, against all odds, to improve our French.

Unlike most series Spiral gets better, Series 2 was better than Series 1 and Series 3 better than both. Having said that all three are well worth watching and are better than any current American or British cop show.

As in the two earlier series it opens with the discovery of a body, this time a mutilated prostitute, when a second body is discovered the search for the 'Butcher of La Villette' is on. Around this main case various other cases revolve including one of corruption in a local Town Hall and by implication in the Ministry of Justice. We even get to see the formally 'by the book' Judge Roban breaking the rules and the law in order to get the bad guys. Plus we still get to see Laure and Gilou getting in and out of trouble and testing the loyalty of fellow team member Tintin with their borderline methods.

Throw in a few pimps, East European prostitutes and corrupt lawyers and you have the best cop show since the Wire and the Shield. Oh and there is a police officer to seems to answer to the name `Teddy Bear'. Only in France !

She works to fill the void. Without her job, she has nothing. After a devastating security lapse, Police Captain Laure Berthaud is desperate to redeem herself. Nailing the Butcher of La Villette would change everything - he securing maximum media publicity for the savage mutilation of his victims. Despite inadequate evidence, a suspect is apprehended and liberties taken when interrogating him. Colleagues are divided about tactics used. The case is transferred to another department. What for Laure now? She seems on the very edge.

Twelve hour long episodes. All in French. English subtitles. No bonuses.

As before, taut scripts and powerful performances - many main characters stretched to near breaking point. Examining Magistrate Judge Roban is beset with family problems complicating his quest to expose a corrupt mayor. Brilliant lawyer Josephine may be out of her depth with the dodgy clients she defends. Deputy Prosecutor Pierre Clement has antagonized too many on high, they determined to get rid of him.

For all then, plenty of angst. No one-dimensional people here, they wrestling with inner demons as questionable methods are used to bring criminals to justice.

Admittedly not every plot development convinces (Pierre at one point incredibly stupid). Here, though, is a relentlessly hard hitting series, destined to grip many viewers and to earn many awards.

The DVD: Twelve more episodes in the French series 'Engrenages' (series 3), translated for the British market as 'Spiral'. Mutilated bodies of young girls are being dicovered in north Paris, and Capitaine Laure Berthaud leads the investigation, with her team of Gilles, Tintin and (new) Nadia. It turns out they are dealing with a serial killer, and the pressure is on - especially when the wrong suspect is accused. At the same time, Judge Roban (he of the gaunt face) deals with the death of a child in Villedieu, near Paris, where the mayor tries to sideline the Judge by demonstrating his links with the President of the Republic... and the third of our old friends from earlier series, lawyer Pierre Clement, is involved in this death as well, and is leant on by his superiors to steer it all a certain way. He is not the one to buckle, so he is sidelined... and gets involved with flame-haired Maitre Karlsson, the bent (and pretty delectable) lawyer known to aficionadoes of this series, too.
Developments drive Laure Berthaud to the edge of reason - she is so keen on tracking the killer that she loses her sense of proportion - but will she also lose the case to another police department? And are the powers building against Judge Roban going to destroy him, as his direct family is also adding to his burden? Will maitre Clement be able to turn Josephine Karlsson honest - or will she turn him more realistic - and bent?
Watch the twelve episodes of 52 minutes each, and find out!

My opinion: great series, continuing to grip. New feuds, changes in interpersonal relationships, we get to know our favourites better - and then we get surprised, once more... tension builds, and builds...
