This game is really refreshing. While you can only play each scenario once it makes a wonderful party atmosphere if you are having a dinner party.
You get a digital chrono decoder which is like an enigma machine with built in timer and speaker that plays ambient music. You need to use the parts on this machine to solve some puzzles which is a nice touch and it also acts as an interface whereby you plug in the code chips into the top slots to see if you have guessed correct or it will dock you one minute.
The puzzles are generally excellent and very thought provoking. But then there are some that make no real sense and require a weird sense of lateral thinking but thankfully you have prompt cards that you can reveal at certain time intervals if you get really stuck.
I have a few peeves about it though. Mainly in and around the sacrificial components that you need to draw on. You can reprint the files from their website but it is a major hassle so why oh why didn't they use laminated sheets and a dry wipe marker. This is something you can make yourself before you donate the game to a friend but it would have been a valuable insight for them to make.
Another rage inducing issue is one of the Nuclear Countdown puzzles only works if you live in the U.S. which caused us to fail. I won't say what but it drove us to insanity and customer services will be getting a message from me shortly!!!
Anyway, Overall - I consider it to be a wonderful idea and with 2 expansions out already it increases the longevity so I would only buy if you are willing to post-modify the game components (by laminating them) and are happy to play each game once. When you think it is only a tenner for a group of people to have fun for an hour so I recommend it.
The scenarios vary in quality. In my opinion, Prison Break and Nuclear Countdown are stellar, while the other two are "okay" and "ridiculous". Be aware; there's one aspect that would really like you to be based in the US - but you can look up the PDF answers online to get that one code and not feel guilty.
Some puzzles are busywork, some puzzles are extremely clever and satisfying. Pretty good for the price of less than one real escape room.
- Need pens, paper
- Need a tiny screwdriver, and batteries for 1st play
- Also recommend having dry-erase markers and putting components inside the plastic sleeves to draw through, since there are times when you'll be tempted to draw on components
I do recommend the game, just check how much it costs from US Amazon as I think some sellers here have literally bought it there and added a markup - it's not in regular distribution in Europe yet.
