Product Description

Review

One of the things I love about Jacey Boggs as a teacher is that she doesn't mess around by saying what she's teaching is quick or easy. She firmly states that you have to be able to spin to make textured yarns, and the better spinner you are the better texture yarns you will make and the more the process will make sense. There are 8 different types of yarn to make with this book, each building on the skill set of the one before it. She starts the book with a basic wrap technique and ends with a three layered yarn that is the spinning equivalent of rubbing your stomach, patting your head and dancing a jig all at the same time. In between she teaches about loop, coils, corespinning, beehives and all of the combinations of skills that make up the yarns that Jacey is know for and has been teaching around the world. There are typically 4-6 photos for each technique in this book and 2 of those are (really gorgeous) beauty shots. The reminding photos exactly illustrate the crux of making each yarn. These process shots were clearly chosen by Jacey herself. Each yarn technique is broken down into numbered written steps and explained in mechanical detail: set your wheel up this way, your fiber hand does this and your drafting hand does this. There is no magic. With this book, you learn yarn making in a way that is a repeatable, an intentional yarn. You can look at the pictures and read the words and watch the DVD to have the lessons soak into your spinning mind through a variety of learning styles. The DVD follows each of the yarn lessons in the book -- it's very straightforward. It's great to see Jacey spin at her regular pace and also slowed down, so you can see the steps. I found myself rewinding to watch parts over and over. I will repeat that you have to know how to spin already to use this book; it's not for beginners. Even the most determined beginner might find themselves in a puddle of tears and cusswords if you try to leap straight into this type of yarn making. If you do know how to spin the basics, this book and DVD are an excellent learning experience.-Knitty.com

Wow, what a cover. Calling all spinners - take your spinning to the next level with this book that shows how to spin contemporary yarns. The yarns with wraps, coils or bumps are nothing short of fantastic. I love the colours and the texture. Beautifully produced with great photography and instructions plus the added bonus of a DVD. This is my number one book on spinning. It does the job of making you want to grab a wheel and spin. Highly recommended. This review first appeared on Karen Platt's yarnsandfabrics blog.

Excellent book, self explanatory and the DVDis a welcome bonus. Takes you through different methods of spinning art yarns in very clear diagrams and photos, very easy to follow. This can then be reinforced by watching the DVD. Teaches you to relax when trying new movements, to stop holding the wool so tight through nerves that it breaks. A good buy for an intermediate spinner who wants to try something a bit "off piste"

This book is briliant. Jacey's instructions are clear and the DVD really helps to show what she is trying to achieve. She also makes yarns which are wearable and not just an exhibition piece.

The instructions and projects are staged so that it is possible to start with easier yarns and progress to more complex methods.

I would recommend this to any hand spinners who are able to use basic techniques and want to learn more artistic techniques, but which produce yarn that is practical and wearable.

Lovely book lots of ideas and advice and the dvd is really useful, if annoyingly American so quite slow... This book was second hand but turned out to be as new in all respects and I am very happy with it.

This book and DVD Spin Art: Mastering the Craft of Spinning Textured Yarnwas recommended to me by a spinning collegue and how right she was to do so.

By working through the book you build up skills and techniques like building blocks.

The pictoral, written and DVD instructions are all clear and precise taking you through the techniques step by step.

By following Jacey Boggs excellent tutorials I was able to produce an art yarn on my first attempt.

It would be useful to have the basic knowledge of spinning, how your wheel works, how twist is made, balanced yarn etc but I'm sure an adventurous beginner would have no difficulty following JB's instructions.

Jacey Boggs makes these techniques sound easy and fun...I'm sure they are not all easy, but she injects an element of enthusiasm in her writing that makes you want to try them.
