Furst is a brilliant writer and he brings alive times, places and people who no longer exist in this modern world with a clarity that is second to none. This book and his other more recent books are not quite as good as his earlier books. The earlier books heroes and heroines were bit players in the events portrayed and it was more a story of them trying to survive the situations that had been forced on them and their survival to the end of the book was conclusion enough . The more recent books seem to make their heroes more important in the great scheme of things and their rewards are a more positive definitive ending.

A detective story set in wartime germany and begun in berlin. the narrative is enthralling. The constant expressions of disgust with nazi germany are convincing but repetitive. The trail of events leading to the murder of one of heydrich's aides is a gripping agatha christie like sequence. Too much sadistic- cruelty for pleasure. Pornograhic violence which may attract some but did not light up the story .An excellent resume of the history of the participants at the end is excellent. Very informative.

Thrillers require a plot and Furst is a master of plot; the story moves neatly and inexorably to its climax, again this author has proved himself a master of the ' Spy Thriller' genre which evoke the atmosphere of era ( 2nd World War Greece.
He has rightfully so , in my opinion , been compared to John le Carré and Graham Greene.

Another great book from Alan Furst. Mingles historical fact with fictional situations in a way it feels like a trues story!!
Just started reading Mission to Paris and this is looking equally as good.

An excellent read on the whole although sometimes a little slow. The book is extremely well researched both from an factual historical point of view and also in the way that people's lives at the time are portrayed. Very good.
