Spider Woman's Daughter is an intricately plotted, suspenseful, colorful, and unforgettable journey. Readers will fall in love with Bernie Manuelito and look forward to Anne Hillerman's next effort in what should be a long, enjoyable, successful series. Her depiction of the Navajo Nation is spot on. I loved this book.--Jo-Ann Mapson, author of award-winning "Solomon's Oak "and" Finding Casey"

"Chip off the literary block-there are a lot of things Tony taught is daughter, Anne, and one of them was how to tell a good story. Spider Woman's Daughter is a proud addition to the legacy, capturing the beauty and breath of the Southwest as only a Hillerman can."--Craig Johnson, author of the Walt Longmire Mysteries, the basis for A&E's hit television series "Longmire"

A daughter takes on her famous father's legacy in resuming a series focused on Navajo culture...maintaining the integrity...throughout.--Kirkus Reviews

"[H]eart-stopping, action-packed...VERDICT Fans of Southwestern mysteries will cheer this return of Leaphorn and Chee."--Library Journal (starred review) on SPIDER WOMAN'S DAUGHTER

From the Back Cover

Legendary tribal sleuths Leaphorn and Chee are back!

The supremely talented daughter of New York Times bestselling author Tony Hillerman continues his popular series with this fresh, new mystery her debut novel filled with captivating lore, startling suspense, bold new characters, vivid color, and rich atmosphere.

It happened in an instant: After a breakfast with colleagues, Navajo Nation Police Officer Bernadette Manuelito sees a sedan career into the parking lot and hears a crack of gunfire. When the dust clears, someone very close to her is lying on the asphalt in a pool of blood.

With the victim in the hospital fighting for his life, every person in the squad and the local FBI office is hell-bent on catching the gunman. Bernie, too, wants in on the investigation, despite regulations strictly forbidding eyewitness involvement. Her superior may have ordered her to take some leave, but that doesn't mean she's going to sit idly by, especially when her husband, Sergeant Jim Chee, is put in charge of finding the shooter.

Pooling their skills, Bernie and Chee discover that a cold case involving Chee's former boss and partner, retired lieutenant Joe Leaphorn, may hold the key to the shooting. Digging into the old investigation with discriminating eyes and a fervent urgency, husband and wife find themselves inching closer to the truth with every clue . . . and closer to a killer who will do anything to prevent justice from taking its course."

Contrary to Ms Hillermans comments at the end of the book I think her use of Chee and Leaphorn in this book does her no credit. If she is an author then she should create her own characters not use her father's reputation. In addition she has a much more sentimental approach than I like, and has failed to create the unspoken nuances in her father's books. I find it impossible to judge the book in its own right. Will not read more until she creates her own characters. I think the road she has chosen will result in her being compared to her father until she becomes her own person. She included some Navajo lore but really it was just another police procedural that could have happened anywhere

Arrived during the week and have already started reading this. Was sad when I learned of Tony Hillerman's death and that there would be no more Jim Chee/Joe Leaphorn books, so was delighted to hear that his daughter was continuing with the stories. Have only just started the book but so far have not been disappointed and Anne Hillerman clearly takes after her father. If you are a Tony Hillerman/Jim Chee/Joe Leaphorn fan it is a must and you will not be disappointed.

I found this very disappointing, having read all Tony Hillerman's novels. Obviously there were always going to be some differences in style and language, but, apart from the characters, there seemed little in common with previous Leaphorn and Chee novels. From the first pages it was obvious that it had been written by a woman (new green trainers, etc), and as the story progressed there was just simply too much of the relationship between Chee and Manuelito, and too much thinking about the relationship by Chee; I don't believe that men do spend several pages in introspection! Some of the plot twists were a little unbelievable; surely Louise would be in touch immediately she heard about Leaphorn, despite what else was going on in her life?

Tony Hillerman was my favourite all-time author for years. I loved Leaphorn and Chee and jumped at the chance to read more about them when Anne Hillerman reprised the characters. Spider Woman's Daughter was a good story and it contained a lot of what I relished in T Hillerman's books. I particularly appreciated the fact that the female voice was given a prominent role. However I feel that this was perhaps a rather tentative adoption of well-loved characters and location and I await further books with interest to see how things develop.

The Hillerman literary genius lives on through the brilliant work of Anne Hillerman. leaphorn and Chee continue as they should, in a magnificent story. Thank you Hillerman family for all your hard work from the very beginning. You have given so many of us great joy with your incredible talents and love of the Southwest. You are the best. Thank you.

Continuing the legacy of her father Tony Hillerman, Anne Hillerman writes well of the landscapes and the people and the ways of the Dina'i, the Navajo people. I found new insights, more detailed description of the lives of the people, and particularly of the women, which is very good. And the story contains echoes of other stories of Hillerman, so a good continuity. Think the ending is not quite as skilful as her father's, hence the four stars, but am really looking forward to further stories, as she hones that skill. Great to have it for all Hillerman fans

The work tended to become less convincing towards the end. It was a little as if the author 's engine had run out of steam. Overall, though, it was an interesting attempt to continue in the Hillerman tradition.

Do not read this unless you have finished reading the earlier Chee and Leaphorn novels as this may spoil them for you, as it gives away plots and endings of earlier novels. It's an OK read but not as good as Tony Hillerman's writing.
