The big screen debut for the late 1990s phenomenon 'The Spice Girls'. A comedy thriller with the odd documentary piece, it follows the girls as they build up to a live gig at the Royal Albert Hall. As well as rehearsing for the show, the band have to deal with car chases, aliens, paparazzi, hordes of fans and a bungling documentary team getting in the way the whole time. Also included is a 45-minute video featuring exclusive behind-the-scenes interviews, plus the bonus track 'Mama', performed live at the Albert Hall.
It doesnt matter whether you approach Spiceworld: The Movie as a guilty pleasure, or an easy carnival of fun: it still holds together better than you have any right to expect.
Made at the height of the Spice Girls fame, Spiceworlds paper-thin plot finds the girls moving between a series of light excuses for a song, before arriving at the obligatory big concert at the end. Its brainless stuff, of course, but the wise move here was to bring in a variety of names to help give the film a little more credence. Richard E Grant, for instance, works well as the bands manager, and while youd hardly say its the best film on the CVs of Roger Moore, Richard Briers or Alan Cumming, their presence does Spiceworld no harm.
Its the five Spice Girls, of course, whose raw enthusiasm (as it was back then) powers Spiceworld though, with a surprising number of laughs, and enough moments to enjoy. And while the band may bear little relation to their older selves now attempting to relight the success they enjoyed, for the Spice Girls, Spiceworld proved to be a successful project, and one worth giving another spin. It was never an Oscar winner, but it can still raise a smile. --Jon Foster

I understand that this film is in the top 100 worst films that are so bad they are good. I agree. This is an enjoyable film, with so many cameos from famous faces, it moves along at a good pace despite not having much plot. There are actually some very funny lines delivered by the girls who all move the film along with great enthusiasm. Now has something of a late 1990s time capsule film of London, so starting to look nostalgic too!
