By means of an enslaved god's life essence a dark necromancer is trying to reanimate the powerful circle mages and makes them his unholy servants. Only the power of the Phoenix Stone will be able to prevent the returning of the Circle.
Thus the rune is summoned again to finally put an end to his former slave-masters.
But to free the special power of the Phoenix Stone the blade of the Shadow Sword is required which is held by the rune warrior of Urgath. The two avatars need to combine their powers and work together to overcome this final enemy.

As to the game itself, once again the gameplay is pretty good - I've played it through with a Spellforce character and with a Breath of Winter one and whilst there isn't a lot of difference in terms of the actual game play the cut scenes do contain different dialogue to indicate where the character came from. The level of challenge is probably just about right - the game is not too hard the first time through, but it is quite easy the second time around. As you get further into the game the monsters do get more difficult but the AI isn't that good - they pretty much just swarm you and try to take you out with numbers and the tactics I use can cope with that quite easily. As stated earlier each race has 2 new buildings and warriors. The first building allows you to sacrifice food to create swarm units - basically you get a large number of creatures that attack the enemy - personally I don't use them as they die very easily and don't cause a lot of damage. The second building allows you to create siege units - useful to take out enemy buildings from longe distance - I used these on one level where they are required as each unit consumes 3 of your normal unit allocation and I always feel i can use this allocation more efficiently with unit types.
There has obvioulsy been a lot of thought gone into the level design and most to the levels are pretty big. As with the other Spellforce games do expect to be playing at midnight and wonder where the time has gone - but just don't expect anything new.
If you like Spellforce then you will like this 8/10.
However, I've had a lot of problems trying to run it on 64bit Windows 7.
When starting up it gives me an error message of a kernel error, I've looked around and various forums say this is due to the copy-protection software which has issues with 64bit Windows.
I contacted the customer support email address in the manual who then referred me to someone else who provides support now for the game.
Their first suggestion was to download the latest patch to which they gave me a link, this did not fix the problem.
I replied saying this but that was a few weeks ago and I still haven't heard.
According to the forums the only solutions are illegal, so I won't be doing those.
Disappointing as I like the original Spellforce games.
Good stories and side quests.
Kept me up all hours as it is very hard to stop without solving one more quest!
