On first impressions this joypad seems decent. Good solid feel, nice rubbersed finish, buttons and sticks feel ok. And for me the biggest plus is that it mirrors the XBox 360 controller identically which I much preffer.
However my number one annoyance with this unit is (as several other people have stated) are the dead zones with the triggers, when playing any FPS games, 9 times out of 10 you will only let of a single round or burst rather than giving full auto fire and you will end up mashing the button furiously. Additionally the analouge right trigger only seems to give about 4/5 play, I noticed this when playing GTA5 online as my cars seemed to be going substantially slower. To prove I wasnt crazy and just whigning that I couldnt win a race due to my dodgy controller me and a friend conducted a test, we both had the same car, same driving skill, catchup off, no slipstreaming etc (as close to even keel as we could make it) and in a straight line side by side he was still pulling ahead significantly when I used this controller.
The auto fire function works fine, however there is no visual indication to let you know if it is on or off and for which button it is set to which is very annoying.
The D-pad feels a little flimsy compared to the rest of the pad, it sits a little raised from the rest of the unit and to me feels like it is going to snap if pressed too hard, that said it seems to work ok when needed.
All in all im pretty dissapointed and Ive consigned this joypad to the drawer most likley never to be used again.
***Update***
Just checked the speedlink website and noticed that they state that the L2/R2 buttons are as they put it 'on the same axis' and will not work of pressed simultaneously!! Essentialy meaning that in the majority of FPS you cannot aim/fire properly at the same time in the default configuration!! Seems a tad odd to me!!
Also I have now started using this as a game pad for my PC rather than the PS3, mainly for use with a SNES emulator and it works quite well without any problems. (although no games require use of the L2/R2 buttons!!!)
For it
360 style controller
Nice texture on controller even with sweaty hands
No deadzones so far
Nice weight not to heavy not to light
Against it
D-pad is worst I`ve ever come across but if your only using it for up,down, left, right its o.k but not for say top left bottom right it kind of floats almost like comparing a Dual shock to a 360 controller for D-pad but going one step further
No R1-R2 switching
50-50
Some people may like it some wont I dont like the fact its a rechargeable controller prefer a 360 style pack where if you are running low on battery you just grab some batteries you have charged instead of having to wait hours to use it again
Conclusion
For me it is definitely worth it have been searching for ages for a decent 360 style PS3 controller but have always heard horror stories of major lag and deadzones which this does not suffer from at all for me anyway. So would definitely recommend this to anyone looking for a 360 style wireless controller for a PS3
I use it to play Dark Souls on my PC and it works perfectly fine, there are some niggles here and there, like the right button has to be pressed properly instead of like a quick tap as it wont actually press (think its just out of place a bit) its no biggie as in a game like Dark Souls you never really tap the button as you want to make sure you press it at the right time.
The only other thing that has happened is that like once in a while it'll register some random button presses when I have not pressed them, now every time has been when the controller is not charging so it could just be the battery running low but that's just me guessing.
All in all its an excellent product regardless the minor points and personally I feel my money was well spent.
