To be honest, the first 5 minutes of this film were pretty rubbish. It seemed a bit cheesy and the film had clearly never been near any digital remastering. Get through that, and things pick up considerably when the film acquires ambience as the crowds turn up for the Sebring 12 hours. By the time we visit the Targa Florio, it is evident that this documentary is blessed with the most important attribute for a film about passion... it is made with genuine love and has a heart. The Targa Florio footage is a highlight, a delicious mix of the unique sight of thoroughbred racing cars tearing through sleepy historic villages and the light humour of the interplay with the locals. The Le Mans footage is good, but I already knew what was coming during the race, and I was impressed with the sensitivity with which the film deals with what might be termed the "cost" of this passion.

While this film can't really communicate exactly what it is that makes the drivers do what they do - after all, most of them probably couldn't tell you themselves - it is very successful at showing the world in which motor racing operates, and a bit about what makes it so special to those who love it. It would make an excellent primer on the sport to the casually curious outsider. Finally, having taken you on the journey of a season, with its highs and lows, the film finishes brilliantly, with a close that should be taught to budding film-makers... you don't need to know who wins the last race: as the film closes the race is on, and the excitement in the voice of the PA system leaves you wanting more.

If only there had been more motor racing documentary/films made like this.

Anyone interested in this period of Motorsport should definitely consider this DVD. This has great behind-the-scenes and on-track footage of the 1972 sports car season complete with early seventies groovy music soundtrack.

In particular the Targa Florio and Le Mans coverage is superb and a real reminder of a time when Motorsport was far more treacherous and daring than in today's safety conscious world.

There are also some amusing candid scenes with the drivers. One classic moment finds the Ferrari team lazing by a pool swapping stories - the late great Ronnie Peterson tells Andretti, Redman and Ickx about a bee flying on to his nose just before he can drop his visor right at the start of a race, resulting in a frantic swishing of his hand while he should've been concentrating on getting off the line safely!

Even at £16.99 this is well worth the purchase.

Superb period documentary. An era when racing drivers were not prima donnas and racing was really dangerous, but everyone just got on with it. The early 70s at Sebring, Nurburgring and the Targa Florio - unbelievable.

The story of the 1972 sports car World Championship, narrated by Mario Andretti of Ferrari and Vic Elford of Alfa Romeo. With interviews with Brian Redman, Jacky Ickx and Helmut Marco, (who is now boss of Red Bull F.1.) . Reasonable coverage of each of the featured races, and some 'in car' track action, but for me, the highlight of the film, are the Targa Florio shots of the cars power sliding out of a corner in a Scicilian village, past the V.W. van parked at the side of the road, and the villagers standing at the side of the road cheering them on, 'Magic'.

This is a profound motor racing film that could not be made today. In the absence of a dramatic constructors battle, the documentary focuses instead upon the intimate, personal perspectives of the racing season. Each race has its own tone: festive at Sebring, pastoral at the Targa Florio, elegiac at Le Mans. Mario Andretti's happy-go-lucky commentary contrasts wonderfully with Vic Elford's more reflective musings. Amazing.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great documentary

If you are a racing fan this is a must have. One of the best racing documentaries I have seen and covers a period when top drivers were racing in F1, Can-Am, and the manufacturing championship endurance racing sports cars of this documentary. It also highlights how dangerous it used to be and how far safety measures have come in the years since this film.
