5.0 out of 5 stars EXCELLENT GUIDE FOR NOVICE PUBLC SPEAKERS 16 Sept. 2000
By Celine Ravell - Published on Amazon.com
Format: Paperback
I came across SPEECH COMMUNICATION MADE SIMPLE by accident. A friend is using this book as a text in a college speech class. I glanced through it and realized that is would be perfect for me. In my new position, I have to make lots of presentations. I have very little public speaking experience and really needed a guide. This is a wonderful book to help guide anyone through the process of writing, organizing, and rehearsing a speech. I highly recommend it to anyone, not just ELS speakers or college students. The chapter on Speaking to Inform was particularly helpful and extremely well written. This book is so user friendly and practical. I refer to it often. I like it even more than Public Speaking for Dummies, which I did find to be helpful, too.

5.0 out of 5 stars This book is THE BOMB 29 Dec. 2011
By David P. Roe - Published on Amazon.com
Format: Paperback Verified Purchase
I use this book in my IEP classes for intermediate ESL students. The organization and structure is as complete as it gets. It starts by addressing common fears of public speaking, replacing those fears with more positive outlooks, and then helps the teacher to build students' confidence by introducing and explaining each step that is needed to deliver an organized, well-researched, interesting, and powerful speech, while leaving plenty of flexibility for students to choose topics that are special and interesting to them. (Each chapter also includes a pronunciation exercise, though I supplement these with exercises from English Pronunciation Made Simple [Dale & Poms, Longman, 2005] that more directly target the needs of the current class.) Highly recommend this book!

This textbook has made my life much simpler in my first year to teach speech to high school students. The text is organized and easy to understand so that it provides a great outline from which to work.

1.0 out of 5 stars then you're better off buying the NEW S 23 Sept. 2014
By Amazon Customer - Published on Amazon.com
Format: Paperback
Do not buy this book if you expect it to be a follow up to the book Speech Communication Made Simple, 3rd edition (copyright 2006). You will have to buy the NEW Speech Communication Made Simple 1 book (released in 2013).

This "second" book is nearly identical to the original. Not only are the chapters nearly identical, all of the content, examples, and assignments are the same as the first Speech Communication Made Simple book.

If you already own class sets of the original, then you're better off buying the NEW S.C.M.S. #1.

1.0 out of 5 stars SKIP THIS BOOK! 8 Oct. 2014
By Lori Barkley - Published on Amazon.com
Format: Paperback
This edition is HORRID. If it were possible to give NO stars I would. I absolutely loved the second and third editions. This book WAS the only book for ESL students that focused solely on Public Speaking while providing ESL support (pronunciation and cultural info). Now the information seems overly fragmented, the layout is difficult to look at, and the content doesn't appear to match the target proficiency level. (Intermediate speakers doing Maslov's motivational sequence - which is persuasion). I will NOT be ordering this book again for my Public Speaking course. What a shame.
