Spartacus - This has got to be one of the classics of modern TV series.
Little truth is known about Spartacus ("...history is written by winners....") nor his life. However, this collection follows a little more closely what IS known of him. Unlike the Kirk Douglas film version, Spartacus did not die nailed to a cross, it was thought that he died in the final battle against the Romans, perhaps not quite as depicted in this series...but this is much closer to the truth.
Ok, I accept that some viewers may be put off by the 'graphic novel style' blood letting and the language often leaves much to be desired. I can't believe noble Romans went around 'effing and blinding' all the time, but modern TV writers keep trying to push back the boundaries of acceptable TV (for example, the oft-used "C" word once a real no-no).
Despite all of this, I really enjoyed all 4 of the series to the point where, having watched all 4, immediately after finishing this final series, I am going through them all again.
Very highly recommended (but not for those of a squeamish disposition). A most definite 5 star rating
