This performance of 'Spartacus' is the best I have seen on a recorded DVD version. Nothing can beat watching a performance 'Live' but this DVD comes very close to causing the excitement, spine-tingling, lump-in-throat of a special performance. Irek Mukhamedov is brilliant. His huge leaps (which caused me to gasp as they looked huge even on the Bolshoi stage), fabulous artistry and technique is shown off to it's best by the inspired choreography by Grigorovich. Both Mukhamedov and Natalya Bessmertnova have electrifying stage presence, both very musical and passion felt performances. Out of all the available versions I would recommend this one over all others. The Bolshoi always produce magnificent dancers, but they also produce prodigious stars and Mukhamedov is most certainly a brilliant star.
Khachturian's score (known to many as the music used in the 70's British t.v. series the 'Onedin Line') is powerful and emotional. The designs and scenery look only slightly dull, but what would one expect in a ballet of this theme? They are entirely appropriate to the story and historic period that they depict.
Absolutely fabulous - you cannot go wrong buying this DVD version of 'Spartacus', even less so if you buy it for a male ballet fan, young or old! (Although I am female!)

This performance is superb!Mukhamedov (at the very height of his artistry) does make believe he is Spartacus and his dancing is absolutely outstanding.Besmertnova is sublime,Bylova excellent. The quality of the DVD(colour) does not match the quality of this Bolshoi production but this detail is minimum compared to the magic one feels when flooded by the sublime combination of so much beauty and strength.Grigorovitch's choreography is rich and powerful. Not to loose!

I first saw this ballet many years ago and couldn't wait to get it on VHS. Now I have the DVD. It is largely a men's ballet, a dramatic ballet, with fantastic solos and men's chorus dancing.
