About the Author

Award-winning author Bette Lee Crosby is originally from New Jersey, but now makes her home in Southern Florida where she lives with her husband Richard and an adopted Bichon Frise. A highly entertaining public speaker, Bette makes frequent appearances to support the various charities of women's groups, and schedule permitting, she will join book talks and book club discussion groups. In 1997 Bette abandoned the fast-paced world of advertising and embarked on a career as a novelist. Her books, frequently written in a Southern voice, cover a wide spectrum of locales and personalities as they tell tales of courageous women overcoming life's obstacles. Her novels were first recognized in 2006, when she won the National League of American Pen Women Award for unpublished fiction with What Matters Most. In 2007 she won the National League of American Pen Women's First Place Fiction Award for her novel Girl Child; in 2009 her novel Cracks in the Sidewalk received the prestigious Royal Palm Literary Award from the Florida Writers Association for Women's Fiction and in 2010 her novel Spare Change received a Royal Palm Literary Award for unpublished fiction. Before redirecting her talents to works of fiction, Bette enjoyed a noteworthy career in advertising and marketing working in a diversity of industries ranging from financial services to collectibles. She served as Editor-in-Chief for Innovations, a new product development publication, and as Contributing Editor for numerous trade publications including Giftware News, Supermarket News and Packaging Digest. As the U.S. Marketing Director for the distributor of world famous M.I. Hummel figurines, Bette served as a company spokeswoman and public relations figurehead. Much of her career, however, was spent in the challenging environment of advertising agencies-including a five-year stint as co-owner and Creative Director of the award-winning OTK Advertising Agency.

I have never done what I am doing now ever before...
I have read a lot of books, I love reading. Some I read are brilliant, some are ok and others so bad that they're impossible to finish but this book. This book is amazing! What it is that I have never done before is to leave a review of a book, or indeed a review of anything, before I have fully tested it out.
But here I am, just 28% of the way through and already I have been on the edge of my seat with apprehension, I have smiled genuine smiles laughed out loud and cried real tears. I can't put it down and I fear that I'm in for a sleepless night because of it but I am sure that I will continue to feel like this throughout hence writing this now.
Despite not waiting to stop reading I felt compelled to write this review. I want to text my mum and tell her to read it too, immediately. It's just got me. I appreciate that everyone's opinion differs and some may read this and think 'what a load of hogwash', but I don't care. I do hope though that someone else reads this book and is just as crazy about it because it fully deserves recognition and praise. And that's me not even going into the wonderful way that the characters are all so real and the language and the setting of each scene.
I'm very pleased to note that this just one in a series!

This is a truly remarkable read from a fantastic author.
It's Mothers Day today so I knew I had the day to myself to read. I wanted a book that I could lose myself in and this did not disappoint. This book was recommended to me by my book friend Sue. I'm wondering now why I haven't read all Bette's book as this was a gem.

This book was so well written. The storyline had me gripped. This author has a great way of story telling. I felt I was there among the characters in this story. Throughout this book I got goosebumps reading it. To me that's a sign of a great book

Oh have I said how much I love the name Olivia? Well I do. It's actually my middle name and I'm named after my nanny(grandmother).

I highly recommend this read.

Set in the 1950s Spare Change is a story from differing viewpoints. Olivia Westerly is quite happy being independent and living on her own, working at the telephone exchange. With no desire to get married, much less have children, her life continues comfortably in the same way it has for years. Until, that is, she meets Charlie Doyle. It doesn’t take long for Charlie to woo her and almost before she knows what’s happened they are married and Olivia is happier than she ever thought possible. But Charlie dies on their honeymoon and Olivia is inconsolable.

Ethan Allen is eleven years old living with his parents on a farm. His mama, Susannah, is flighty and totally undomesticated, she just wants to go to New York City to be a singer, it’s all she talks about. But Ethan’s daddy, Benjamin, has no intention of allowing it. Between the fighting, making up and general disregard from his parents Ethan does’t have much of a childhood or upbringing. When horrific and violent events occur he runs to the only person he can think of, the grandfather he has never met.

This is a gritty and, at times, tragic story with very distinctive, well formed and colourful characters that will surely pull the reader into their lives. It was easy to get involved in the story and sympathise with the characters, especially Ethan. He is very credible given his life up to that point and the developing relationship between him and Olivia is touching.
I like the way the characters are all woven together to create an engaging story with humour, sadness, some violence but also hope and trust. The first person perspectives at the beginning of each chapter is a nice touch, like eavesdropping on that character's thoughts.
There’s an unmistakable theme of good versus evil running through, not in a preachy way, showing the best and worst of human nature. The epilogue may not appeal to all readers but for me it rounds the story off nicely.

Spare Change is set in Southern America, and follows the main character, a bit of a feminist who thinks she knows what she wants from life.

The book is a reasonable read, it ambles along nicely, but did feel slightly laboured towards the end.

The two main characters' lives are nicely explained and described, and we see how the paths cross, ultimately to better each others' lives. The narrative is interspersed with accounts from the characters, adding an interesting and different dimension to the story.

The main characters wasn't hugely likeable to start with, but I did develop an empathy with her, and she becomes more likeable as her path crosses with her `grandson'.

The final ending was touching and well done and was a nice, neat end to the book.

An enjoyable tale set in the American South told through first and third person points of view via various voices. When Olivia Boyle's husband Charlie dies during their honeymoon, she is devastated but little does she know what life has in store for her! Charlie's grandson, Ethan Allen, witnesses the deaths of both his parents and makes his ways from the Eastern Shore of Virginia to Wyattsville, where Olivia lives, in search of his grandfather. He is very reluctant to divulge exactly what happened back home and he is a very frightened but courageous boy. However, with the help of Detective Jack Mahoney, the truth is slowly revealed.

I found the story fast paced and interesting - it certainly kept me turning the pages. It is quite humorous, but at the same time there is a serious thread running through it. The way it is told reminds me a little of Fannie Flagg's books, an author of whom I am a fan. I liked the characters, some of them are quite quirky and I thought them well drawn. I cared very much what happened to Ethan Allen, he was such a resourceful and fearless young man!

An easy, entertaining and heartwarming tale which I would recommend to those who enjoy slice-of-life stories containing a hint of mystery and a smattering of romance.

My thanks to Bette Lee Crosby for sending me a free copy of the Ebook to download onto my Kindle. It was a pleasure to read it!
