So on to this story, Red Spanking. I have to say this one concludes a lot of dangling questions from the various series that all intermingle (Brac Pack, Brac Village, Christian Coven, etc. etc. etc. . . . Actually, I lost track of how many there are but Lynn Hagen is great at updating her web page and listing the reading order.
The main part of this story is the coming together of Lester and Harley. Lester thought his life was boring -- Still living at home with his dad and his only 'excitement' is going out with the neighborhood watch, his goofy friends. Yet when we meet and get to know Harley - His life is even worse. He's a bar bouncer and all he does is door duty and has done that one job for decades. But now that Harley has a mate he's leaving that sad job to look for something better. Unfortunately there isn't page space to see where his skills take him.
As usual there's a new threat to the area, this time it's Vampire Hunters. They're well equipped and knowledgeable, knowing where vampires live, who their leaders are, who is on the ruling council, and murder one of the councilors. Their precision is scary and the threat real.
There is humor, something I really like in these stories. There was a nice follow up with past characters, and the leaders are still fighting the good fight, keeping watch over their territories and people. At times I had to stop and think about the people mentioned. Here they're hovering over a corpse and I couldn't remember the details from the last book. !!
My only gripe is the title of this story - Red Spanking is a drink given to Lester as a 'date rape drug'. . . Which caused Lester to act uninhibitedly, forcing submission, something Lester wasn't prepared for and he had no control over. Hadley was just as upset, disgusted by the whole situation and like the good guy he is, doesn't take advantage and carries Lester home. So Red Spanking is a drink of questionable taste and also the title of this story. I guess there is a message there. Interesting choice for a title. - Dan's Wife
Finally getting Harley's story especially after having just read the seventh and eighth ones in the series made this book more understandable. The neighborhood watch crew is back and is as funny as ever. They have new neighbors to accuse of imaginary crimes and new villains to focus on. Their van even gets a makeover to advertise their new "Vampbusters" plans.
Lester, Harley's mate is tired of the life he's been living and wants so much more. Number one on that list is taking a chance and going after Harley. Lester doesn't know that he is Harley's mate only that he is strongly attracted to the man. He doesn't even understand what anyone means when they refer to him as a mate. He finds out some shocking things about himself that both surprise and please his mate.
Harley has been in a rut for 300 years. His new mate is making him rethink a lot of things. Even going to work each evening. Harley's protective instincts become necessary to save not only his mate but others he comes to care about. He becomes close with the vampire, Dante who lives with his mate's human family. Harley has a lot to learn about what it means to be human, just as Dante did. But because it's concerning his mate he doesn't hesitate to do what he must.
Lynn Hagen introduces some new nasty characters, as well as mystifies the Ulsioum with the location of other super baddies Jaden and Mateo. You never know what to expect in a Hagen novel with the exception of laughs, mates, and trying to figure out who is next on the mate "love boat".
