This set comes with a very slim book (more like a pamphlet). Even worse the pronunciation is not for European Spanish. Not a problem if it said it was for Latin American Spanish, but it doesn't. The main purpose of using a CD is work on pronunciation, so this rather important and for my purposes (as the course I'm following is for European Spanish) makes these CDs of little use.
The chapters take you through the basics, leading up to full conversation.
However, I have a couple of problems with this set. The first is that the Spanish audio has been recorded by someone not from Spain (rather south america or similar) some of the pronunciation is a little off. Most instances of a 'c' in the middle of the word (such as 'precio') he hasn't pronounced as the 'th' sound that it should be, but rather in the south american 'ss' sound. The reason I wanted an audio tape set was to learn the pronunciation of words! The second is that there are some very strange mistakes, or uses of an uncommon word when there is a far simpler word. 'Bedroom' for instance, is translated as 'recámara' when in reality 'dormitorio' is far more common. My partner tells me that 'recamara' is more often used for the chamber of a gun. However, these are things that you can get past if you're ok with the occasional instance of "Excuse me?! What did you mean to say there?" when you're practicing. No matter how you learn, a native speaker will be able to tell you a better word, or way of phrasing things, and you have to take these pre-recorded lessons with a pinch of salt. This was a great way to get started with Spanish without going to lessons, and it even teaches the grammar in a way that is easy to understand, not to mention enjoyable.
I like that the Spanish is repeated so that you hear it twice, it means when you first start you can hear it, try it, hear it and try it, but then there is plenty of space left between the English word and the Spanish pronunciation at the start that once you've had the tapes for a while you can get in before the Spanish speaker and get that as confirmation, rather than learning. I love these tapes, and they're great if you have anywhere to commute to.Read more ›
