This is a different type of cookbook. It is based on authentic farmhouse recipes recently found handwritten by Great-Grandma in rural Spain. I read it from cover to cover as the descriptions were so vivid. The recipes are for real gutsy food, with few ingredients and plenty of taste. The cooking methods are simple. This book is for foodies who like to cook traditional Spanish farmhouse menus. There is also the opportunity to visit the farmhouse itself and learn how to do it in the lovely finca. 5 stars because: it is different, the photographs are great, the layout is clear, the recipes are traditional and the descriptions give such a picture and history to the story. If you are into Spanish cookery books, buy this!

i'm an enthusiastic cook, and although i love flicking through my Moro cookbook and others like it, my favourite recipes are from a 12 page pull out from the Daily Telegraph, that i found on the bus. the recipes are by Antonio Carluccio and they capture the essence of Mediterranean cookery: simple ingredients simply prepared. this recipe book is very much in the Carluccio style. apart from some of the more specialised wine recommendations, there's none of the 'take a litre of hand-pressed extra virgin argan oil' type-chat that you're likely to get with the (admitedly beautiful) Moro and Moro-alikes; what there is instead is robust country cooking.

there's also a certain rustic charm to the presentation of the recipes. and in this case 'rustic charm' isn't a euphemism, but a recognition that food - though a serious business - is only food.

one thing i should probably mention however. if you're a vegetarian you may want to skip the recipes in that section that demonstrate a typically 1930's attitude to that lifestyle and include anchovies. or ham.

These are some of the easiest Spanish recipes I've tried. You don't need hundreds of impossible to get ingredients, nor loads of kitchen equipment and yet the food turns out great. I also love that there's a good mixture of veggie stuff, which is unusual in a Spanish cooking book. The recipes are simple and wholesome, even my 2 year old boy loves them, especially the Cake in a Moment quick chocolate cake!
