Product Description

Reissue at budget price. THE 'ROOTS' OF SPACEMEN 3 COMPILED BY SONIC BOOM Spacemen 3 were one of the most revolutionary UK guitar bands, whose influence is still being felt today. Their perfectly integrated mixture of trippy pop, spaced-out poetry, acoustic romance and mind-boggling guitar devastation made them one of the most influential bands of the late 80's. With the band's two leaders, Jason Pierce and Peter Kember (aka Sonic Boom), currently enjoying success via Spiritualized and Experimental Audio Research respectively, this extensive compilation is of great interest both for any fan. This is what Sonic Boom considers as the main influences for the sound of Spacemen 3, being an amazing selection of the best music produced in the last 30 years. From the rural folk-blues of LIGHTNING HOPKINS, through the gospel of THE STAPLE SINGERS, to SUN RA, from ultra-rare English Freakbeat THE SYNDICATS (Steve Howe's first band), to LA psychedelic surf FANTASTIC BAGGIES, through electronic music WHITE NOISE, to Detroit's THE MC5 with a rare live "Rambling Rose". Plus some surprises.

...runs the sub-title of this wonderful compilation, originally released on double-vinyl last year. Compiled by Sonic Boom (solo artist, Spacemen 3, Spectrum, E.A.R. & sometime Stereolab member) who offers wonderful sleevenotes, Spacelines looks at the influences of Spacemen 3, the band formed around Peter'Sonic Boom' Kember & Jason'Spaceman'Pierce- the latter went on to form the more succesful Spiritualized (who are still re-recording old Spacemen 3 songs!!!!). This compilation is suitably eclectic, ranging from Bo Diddley to Daniel Johnston to Rolf Harris to John Mayall's Bluesbreakers (& also taking in many acts that are unfamiliar to me). Spacelines is easily as great as the legendary Nuggets-compilations & Boom's sleevenotes more interesting than any description I can offer. This is not a complete sample of Spacemen 3's influences, the band seemed very much to form around early 80s LPs such as Laurie Anderson's Big Science, The Cramps' Psychedelic Jungle & The Gun Club's Fire of Love (alongside the more obvious likes of The Stooges, The Velvets & The MC5...). It's a compilation that everyone should own- it's tracklisting speaks for itself:
1. This May Be the Last Time, The Staples Singers
2. You Don't Care, Bo Diddley
3. Sun Arise, Rolf Harris
4. Transparent Radiation, The Red Krayola
5. Angels & Demons, Sun-Ra
6. Denomination Blues, Washington Phillips
7. I'm so Glad You Don't Know What's on My Mind, Shewolf/Jesse Mae Hemphill
8. Needed Time, Lightnin'Hopkins
9. Please Stay, Cryin'Shames
10. Stay, Maurice Williams & the Zodiacs
11. She's Coming Home, The Wailers
12. I Can't Let Go, Evie Sands
13. Crawdaddy Simone, The Syndicats
14. Elevator Operator, The Rays
15. Perfidier, Xavier Cugat

This is a great compilation, highly listenable. Some obscure tracks with others more familiar, but all can be heard within the music of Spacemen 3 and for that reason I love it. There's garage, soul, jazz and blues and whilst some of the influences on the Spacemen 3 sound are more obvious than others they all fit together like a jigsaw. If you like Spacemen3 you will love this.

A great mixture of the music that influenced Spacemen 3. No one weak track.

A really erratic collection of surprises from Master Boom. Blues to lounge to psych and the truly great Jessie Mae Hemphill as a bonus. Get it while you can.

A superb compilation!! Each track makes sense and the sequence helps to understand their influence on both Spacemen 3 and Mr. S. Boom
