If you like intelligent lyrics and a mixture of sad, wry, funny and quirky songs try this compilation of John Prine classics. Some are reminiscent of early Dylan or Woody Guthrie, some like Neil Young and some pure country (we're not talking Dolly Parton here) more like Johnny Cash at his best. As an introduction to John Prine's music this is hard to beat. Prine's songs combined with a line up of excellent musicians make this an absolute treat.

Shortly after I had been introduced to the genius of John Prine and had aquired some really great releases such as Lost Dogs / The Missing Years & German Afternoons, I was on the look out for a good overview of the man's work. This collection released back in 2000 was suggested to me by a fellow fan and friend, and what a collection it turned out to be. This collection has been described by John Prine in his liner notes as "Songs that have been faithful companions throughout the years, never letting me down and constantly making me new friends, even when I was sleeping". I would have to describe this as a gentle record, full of humour with a few tears thrown in for good measure. Lyrically brilliant and the arrangements are superb and to my mind at least, better than their originals in most cases. I would have to say that this has to be one of my all time top recordings of John Prine, after Lost Dogs / The Missing Years and Fair & Square. If you are looking for a good introduction to JP, you could do a lot worse than than Souvenirs, with its mixture of 'real' country and folk. As the previous reviewer rightly states, there are touches of Dylan & Johnny Cash to be found within.

John is the finest songwriter and the way he inhabits the characters or provides empathy with those long lost small town nobody's is eye watering ...the only crime is that this disc isn't available on vinyl
