I am a modeller who is interested in providing a realistic environment to run my trains through, both inside and outside the railway fence. As such I am always on the lookout for information about the buildings, signals and the area immediately adjacent to the railway. This book provides numerous good quality (for the most part) photos of all the things mentioned above without a train getting in the way. Also, Mr Wallis, being a railwayman, had access to areas from which photos are not usually taken (like from the top of signals). If you are a modeller looking to model a specific location even if that location is included in here, this is probably not the book for you. If, however, you have an interest in railway history or are creating a model of a fictitious Southern location from grouping up to, probably, the sixties, this book will provide a lot of information to help you get the detail right. Recommended.

Unlike the GWR, for example, which had its official photographers and a well-catalogued library, photographs of the Southern Railway and its constituents are much harder to come by. This wonderful book of photos from the Edward Wallis collection fills a large gap in the published press and enormous thanks should go to both David Wallis and Kevin Robertson for making it available to a broader public. Of course, the entire Southern is not covered - Edward Wallis did not get to all four corners of the system - but for less than the cost of a round of drinks, the paperback version represents outstanding value in what it does show. Please follow this up with a second edition!

This is an excellent book providing first class images, primarily of signalling equipment, and I would say a must for anyone modelling the Southern railway or its constituent companies.

A good book with plenty of old, interesting photographs of signals, posts and locations. Those taken of rather isolated, forgotten locations can be of valuable interest to the model railway layout .

This volume is full of fascinating and previously unpublished photos of signals, track-work, stations and other infrastructure on the Southern Railway. An essential volume for anybody modeling the Southern or wanting to explore "beyond the trains themselves."

Yes, quite informative with some interesting illustrations and photos from a bygone age which I grew up through as a teenager. Very nostalgic and good to see the electric multiple units which I rode in at that time.

An excellent publication of archive photos which were very clear and detailed. I would recommend this book to anyone wishing to see new photos previously not published.
