Had been to see film 'Lincoln' about the emancipation of slavery in the USA which was very thought provoking and, being a South African I thought it would be good to re-read the history of SA from early settlers to eventual end of Apartheid - History in an Hour was excellent for historical content and I was delighted and amazed that all that information could be covered in such a short time, but it was. Excellent.

Would recommend it to anyone who would like to know history of South Africa and has not got the time or inclination to read through history books.

The History in an Hour series is such a great and simple idea you wonder why no-one thought of it before.

The format is the same as the other books in the series with a sweeping overview of the main events in a time period that sweeps from WW2 through to present day. No doubt a South African expert would name events that have been missed out but it certainly covers all the main points, events and double dealings of the white majority.

After the main, very readable, narrative there are brief biographies of the main protagonists in the story.

As ever a great starting point to understand a subject from which you can dive into other, far more detailed, books with an understanding of the grand sweep of history.

Anthony Holmes repeats the version of South African history that is taught in South African schools. It is a form of mass radicalisation similar to that which has become the latest world craze. In the case of South Africa, truth and integrity was sacrificed 140 years ago when Kruger first initiated a form of apartheid against the Uitlanders which led to the Boer war. While very brave and militarily capable farmers were fighting his war and dying for his cause (to prolong his corrupt, self-styled government in the Freestate) he was loading stolen gold onto a train so that he could escape via Delagoa. Meanwhile, Boer farmers who had been freed by the British to return to their farms were bullied by the Boer leaders to carry out a terrorist campaign against the British military. Well I am sure we all have our opinion of terrorism and it is difficult to condone such cowardly action. The vast majority of Boers who fought in the main conflict did so with utter and complete bravery and integrity. It was a slur to the memory of those who died so bravely that their brothers should be forced to resort to such tactics. I urge South Africans to read the truth about this part of your history, written by Arthur Conan Doyle an internationally respected author.

If you're looking for a quick introduction to South Africa's past them this is the place to start. Not too detailed but enough to give you a foundation from which to understand the nation as it is today.

I find these 'History in an hour' books very interesting. The contents whilst only superficial, as intended, do give a very good potted version of the subject, which enables the reader, to seek more detailed information on the subject if it interests them.

An excellent introduction into South Africa's history.
The format is very easy to read and when I finished the book, I couldn't wait to read other history in an hour books.
This is an excellent series and is particularly good for those who would like an overview rather than a detailed knowledge of historical events.
