Mcalmont And Butler - Sound Of - Cd

Amazon.co.uk

Vocalist David McAlmont and guitarist Bernard Butler made an odd couple--McAlmont, dreadlocked and openly gay, Butler floppy-fringed and guitar-obsessed. However, The Sound Of McAlmont & Butler stood singularly out in the mid-Nineties for its grandiosity and ambition. McAlmont's falsetto vocals, whipped up into a sweet-and-sour cream of estrangement and infatuation, found a perfect vehicle in Butler's arrangements. His use of big guitars and epic strings on "Yes" and "Disappointment" reminded of a lost pop tradition harking back to Phil Spector and Al Green's "Hi-Sound" of the early Seventies. An antique pop sound to be sure but one which could have been developed in a Nineties context. Sadly, however, the pair duly fell out after this album, which stands as a single glimpse of what might have been. --David Stubbs

I re-discovered this glorious piece of music recently whilst thumbling through tapes when stuck in traffic. How glad I was to be stuck in traffic because this is a complete gem... a lot of people who do know of McAlmont and Butler will know of them because of the massive hit, 'Yes', but thats the first track and only the start of something very special indeed. Bursting with highlight tracks and standout moments, 'Whats the excuse this time?' and 'The Debitor' are both splendidly imaginative groovers, while 'Dissapointment', with its soul-funk feel gradually builds into respectable pop-anthem status. The highlight for me has to be the simply wonderful 'How About You?' which has a soaring summer melody capable of breaking many a heart, but the whole consistancy and mood of the album is a credit to 2 fantastic artists in their own right in a fascinating collaboration.

99% of my cassettes are in a big box in the cupboard, only a few of them have lasted from the time I bought my CD player. One of them is the first Portishead album and the other is this masterpiece.
Starting on a high with 'yes' the album continues for an hour with some of the best music you will ever hear.

David McAlmont's vocals and former Suede guitarist Bernard Butler combine beautifully to make this album a special pop moment - on songs like 'Yes' and 'You Do', the pair make the best music of either of their careers. Personal differences led to their split very soon after this album, making this a once-off opportunity. If you've never heard it, get hold of it - its really not to be missed. Magic.

I bought this CD back in 1997 after hearing the fantastic "Yes". Even now, 15 years later, the entire album is still a constant delight and never away from my stereo for more than a couple of months. Singing along to the incredibly emotional lyrics and trying to match McAlmont's swooping vocals have brought me some very strange looks in many a traffic jam, but it is such an incredible collection of music that just I can't help myself. There's not a bad track on the album (although obviously I have my favourites among them) and the mood switches from despair to exhilaration and everything in between without jarring the ear. It takes you on a bitter-sweet emotional journey and gives a quick flash of what legendary musical pairing this could have been. Undoubtably one of the most overlooked albums of the 90s. I secretly judge people's musical taste by whether or not they have heard of McAlmont & Butler.

Never heard of McAlmont & Butler until last Saturday - I have no idea how I missed them and the song 'YES' in the 90's!!!. Watched 'The Voice' last Saturday and Jolan, from Ricky's team sang the song 'Yes' and I was absolutely blown away - Jolan and the song were BRILLIANT. I then found out that the song was by 'McAlmont & Butler' and found this album on Amazon. It has arrived this morning and I haven't stopped playing it yet. Some of the songs need a bit of listening to for them to grow on you but it really is a fantastic album - McAlmont's voice is SUPERB and the music and guitar playing of Butler amazing. My favourite tracks, so far, on the album are.... the outstanding 'YES', 'YOU DO' & 'THE DEBITOR'. Found a recent clip of them singing on the Andrew Marr Show on You Tube so, hopefully, they are back together again and I might get to see them live - McAlmont's voice is STILL amazing and excellent guitar playing from Butler who I found out was, originally a founder member of 'Suede'. I think I must have been asleep for part of the 90's!

Vinyl album purchased, I have had the c.d. of this L.P. for years and I love it. This 'remastered' copy is dire. The recording is vey quiet (about half the volume you would expect, meaning you have to crank it up way past normal 'loud' on your volume dial. Compressed I believe is the term. The top end is mushed together and the vocals are muffled. It sounds like it was recorded in mono with tissue over the mic. The vinyl was nearly flat, meaning a tiny warp - and a transparent gold/yellow tinge. Normally one would expect a lot of surface noise on coloured vinyl, but actually there is not to much pressing noise - the issue started before it got manufactured. I don't understand why they go to all this bother to make a duffer. Avoid and find a better version if you want the record. o.m.w.e.

I loved McAlmont & Butler first time round & they haven't lost their appeal. David McAlmont has a fantastic voice & I never tire of listening to him. "Yes" sounds as good now as it did in 1995.

Lovely sound but maybe a bit "samey" after playing twice so far. Will probably grow on me. Luch musical arrangements and a soulful voice. I was hoping for the middle ground between Charles & Eddie and Suede, but the songs aren't distinct/memorable enough yet for four stars.
