This is the Vinyl record I'm reviewing. I got this to listen to Ben Webster but then things got better as I saw that it has Oscar Peterson on piano, Ray Brown, bass and Herb Ellis on guitar. I'm not familiar with Stan Levey on drums but the oters are a garuntee of a good performance. The record version of this is good quality and is quiet when the stylus lands on the record. I actually thought I'd made an error with the function selector but then the superb music began.
I can't really improve on the previous reviews on the musical merits of the performances. I put this LP on my record cleaning machine to take away the static and now have a superb record....that and a malt whisky, highly reccommended!

There's certain albums you'll buy in your life that you just know you'll never stop listening to...This is one of those albums. for my money this is the Great Ben Webster at his Very best. His playing, with all it's trademark Breathyness is just beautiful. I've had this album for many years now and constantly come back to it. Soulville is sheer class. Ben is also back by the brilliant players Oscar Peterson, Ray Brown, Herb Ellis and Stan Levey on this album, their playing is so sutle and understated and just perfect. A very cool album. Don't hesitate with this one!

I know this album. I know the quality of the sound and I know the relative limitations of CD - but this transfer is simply unacceptable. I'm very surprised at Verve allowing this one out.
I could bang on in detail about the sound quality but instead I'll just quote my wife when she heard it (unprompted). "It sounds like it's coming out of a tin can !"
Don't buy it.

This took me back to my formative years when becoming interested in Jazz. Together with the likes of Gerry Mulligan and Chet Baker here is another collection of very easy listening which describes the various moods of Ben Webster. Together with the best backing of Ray Brown-bass,Herb Ellis-guitar,
and Stan Levy -drums the quintet swings along demonstrating various moods of slow and exciting music. A thoroughly recommended CD.
