Grammy-winners Huey Lewis And The News have confirmed the October 18th release of "Soulsville", their first album in nine years, a celebration of the legendary Stax label. Recorded at historic Ardent Studios in Memphis, the album features 14 classic songs from the vault of Stax Records, including "Respect Yourself" and "Got To Get You Off My Mind". Considered to be the preeminent soul music label in America, Stax was home to artists like Otis Redding, Sam & Dave, Booker T & The MG's, and Isaac Hayes, and produced an astounding number of hit records throughout the 1960's & 70's. Ably paying tribute to the rich Stax legacy, Huey Lewis and The News, joined by their long time horn section, capture the energy and excitement of this important era. "We're especially proud of the collection." says Lewis, who has been previewing material from the album while on a critically acclaimed summer tour. "There should be a number of surprises for everyone." Formed from two rival Bay Area bands in 1979, Huey Lewis and The News play a brand of straight-ahead rock and roll that has outlasted countless trends, selling over 20 million albums and earning Grammy Awards along the way. The group still performs around 100 shows a year. Lewis has enjoyed recent success on screen and stage as well, acting on the hit television show "Hot in Cleveland", and performing in the Tony Award-winning Broadway musical "Chicago".

While hardcore fans will know that the band has been paying tribute to this kind of music(as well as early rock 'n' roll & r&b) since their early days this will be news to some people/casual music fans.
Soulsville really gets to show off the bands chops, which are better than ever after some 30 odd years and part of the reason the album works so well is due to the decision to not cover the classics from the Stax vaults but rather some more obscure gems that a lot of people will be discovering for the first time.
Stand out tracks include, Never Like This Before (easily one of the band's most rousing numbers), Respect Yourself, I Want To Do Everything For You and Just One More Day.
A great album, not only for News fans but also for fans of soul music and good music in general.

Nine years since their last record, Huey Lewis And The News return with an album of Stax soul covers, which isn't too much of a departure; Lewis has been playing these songs, or songs in this style, since his days gigging around the bars of San Francisco back in the mid `70s.
Lewis' enthusiasm for the material is one of the reasons that Soulsville works so well, though another important element is the song selection, which generally avoids the bleedin' obvious. Upbeat numbers like "Little Sally Walker" and "Never Like This Before" allow The News to show off their chops, though they're in fine form throughout the album, and appear to understand the material just as well as their leader.
Whether Soulsville will strike a chord with younger listeners is anyone's guess. Fortunately for Lewis and The News, there's no shortage of older fans to pick up the slack, and they'll find much to enjoy here. 7/10.
