Product Description

Amazon.co.uk

Ilian Walker (aka Ils) has only recently entered the mainstream spotlight on the back of an Orange TV commercial. The track in question; "Space (Next Level)" opens Soul Trader with eerie atmospherics, spiralling acid-house effects and a mounting beat that endangers windows for miles around. A connoisseur of beat-driven anthems, Ils balances rousing epic hooks with subtle evocative digital delicacies, seamlessly adding texture with cascading effects and funky rhythms. Joined by a string of guest singers, the rich swirling strings of "No Soul" sees Ils's slick production complemented by the blues-tinged vocals of Declan, while elsewhere Diane Charlemagne's (Moby, Goldie) soulful lilting voice lends a smoky urban ambience. Highlights include the blissed-out, tabla-peppered groove of "Music" and "Trapped"'s insatiable chaotic percussion, laced with haunting claustrophobic lyrics and teasing samples. A sublime hour of bombastic beat mayhem, Soul Trader finally sees Walker open for business. --Christopher Barrett

A stunning CD offering some of the finest cuts Marine Parade has ever made. ILS shows his talents as a producer with some fine, bass heavy tunes with jumpin' breaks. The opening track "6th Space" gets things off to a lively start followed by some soothing soulful tracks namely, "Prohibition" and "Western World". "No Soul" is a classic and the album has a nice flow to it. One of the top entries in my current collection. Enjoy the soothing landscape as ILS hits you with a flurry of basslines and breaks. Quality.

soul trader starts with the epic tune next level (as heard on the orange ad). i suggest you sit in a dark room and dedicate yourself to listen to it in it's entirety, make sure your not busy for half an hour, and keep your finger close to the repeat button. It is an adrenalyn pumping D+B anthem which is as undersated as it is monumental.
the rest of the album doesn't quite get back to the fantastic integrity of next level, but has plenty of golden moments. No Soul is a club worthy tune. some annoying samples let down a few tracks but generally it's a very compitent album which is certainly not predictable. it is an inteligent antidote to crowd pleaser D+B such as aphrodite or timo mass.
i was surprised by the apparent non-exposure of idiots behind the wheel, this one... surely... will take ILS to the 'next level' they so obviously deserve. i reckon it'll be a bigun.

Many moons ago, I was a fan of the the more sublime edge that Ils brought to drum and bass. For a while he seemed to drift from the map a little, but behind closed studio doors his efforts were being channelled into new enterprises.
Ils has slowed the tempo and increased the quality with this album.
His music has grown on rock-solid foundations and this album is the musical equivalent of breaking through adolesence and becoming a man.
'Soul Trader' is complex.
At first listen, the bruising basslines and rustic breaks effortleesly entwine to give the album a minimal feel. But on closer inspection it is clear to see that the tracks are anything but that.
You can expect anything from luscious vocals to whirling synths and well placed synth stabs. The album is technically varied enough and features a couple of tracks that have done the rounds
on the decks and TV alike.
A superb example of what many artists fail to do well - The ability to move with the scene without selling out.
If you buy this CD, it won't be one of those that just sits around on your shelf.
Good and solid.

The US release of Soul Trader comes about a year after the UK release and includes two bonus tracks. Overall the album is good and ILS showcases a clever use of 70's funk samples, strings, ethnic percussions and vocals to give the album a warm yet slightly dark and eerie soundscape throughout. The album opens strongly with the instantly recogniseable "Next Level" which was used in the Orange TV advert. The energy level is carried through with "Are You Ready?" but takes a slight dip after that. There are one or two mediocre tracks in the middle but the album picks up again towards the end with "Feel Alright", "Kashmir" and "Music". High Contrast does a nice mix on "No Soul" while Evilnine throws in some guitars to give "Music" a punkish makeover. If you bought the original UK release, I would not run out to get this but, if you do not have a copy, and happen to be looking for a good drum & bass/nu-breaks album, this is a good place to start.
