About the Author

David is a software engineer by trade, working from home on the forty-one acre ranch he co-owns with his partner. When he's not wrangling websites, he plays upright bass from time to time, studies and teaches esoteric philosophy, and very occasionally wrestles goats. While he had dreamt of writing fiction since his teens, David had never taken that dream very far. Life brought far too many distractions, and many of his ideas languished in storage and drawers. However, in June of 2013 several friends in his writing group pressured him to present a story rather than the poetry or game idea he had been working on. Resurrecting a story about a young woman with an extraordinary talent, he found traction and, before long, had completed NaNoWriMo and a first draft of what was to become "The Soul Thief," book one of the "Gypsy Dreamwalker" series. In 2015 he published the second volume in the series, "The God of Battles." David and his partner Rachel Anderson have co-authored a small collection of poetry, “Poems de Terre,” which may be purchased from Amazon, Barnes & Noble, and other fine booksellers. Ever since the tragic accident that claimed the lives of the Grey family, Dr. Angela Cooper, psychiatrist and half-gypsy psychic healer, has refused to use her dream walking power. However, when Cassandra Grey, a survivor of the deadly fire, turns up unexpectedly at the hospital, Angela agrees to help her. Entering the Otherworld to heal the girl’s mind, Angela discovers a powerful, shadowy presence that knows her name and her darkest secrets.

When Angela’s estranged shaman grandfather warns her that this shadowy entity seeks to steal her soul, she ignores him until it kills a close friend. Now she’s ready to fight, waging a supernatural conflict in the dreamscape of the Otherworld. Discovering that Cassandra’s unconscious mind holds the key to victory, Angela recruits her help to defeat the Soul Thief and save her family, friends, and, ultimately, everyone at the hospital.

I haven't heard of this author until I joined Amazon Unlimited membership and I was in mood for glbt horror book and this book got my attention. It'd worth every second of my time when I started the book. It has a strong horror element in it but not too gruesome or anything that would make you feel sick to your stomach. No, this one has the full of suspense and heart-wrenching moments.

Dr. Angela Cooper is an amazing character that has so many flaws in her characteristics. She has a lot to learn about her own gifts. She'd survived a horrible incident years ago that cause a girl's family to die in the fire. No one knew how it happened until the girl whom Angela thought she died among the family showed up at the hospital where Angela works. In order to fix her mistake, she has to start to use her gift again after swearing herself she will not ever use her gifts.

That is when all the mystery and suspense appeared. Angela is on for a long ride and she discovers who she really is in the past along the trip. The author did amazing job describing what the characters were feeling and how they dealt with the situations where there was no way anyone would've encountered that. The writing was awesome. I didn't find myself repeat any paragraph unless someone interrupted me while I was reading. It was that good when my eyes were literally glued to the words shown on my ereader device.

All minor characters were well described. Nothing was left out. Not even once there was an info dumping. The author balanced it all with the world building, character development, actions, emotions, and list goes on. It'd be so awesome to see this book hit the big screen. I cannot wait for book two!

I highly recommended to anyone who loved to read a book that have a strong supernatural element to it. Yes, it is horror but based on the supernatural of it not the gory. If you're a member of amazon unlimited, it's free to read this book! But I can assure you that it'll worth the cents to spend on. :)

5.0 out of 5 stars "The Soul Theif, " by Dave Menefee is thrilling ... 13 Mar. 2015
By J - Published on Amazon.com
Format: Kindle Edition
"The Soul Theif," by Dave Menefee is thrilling, captivating, and mind bending. It is an original reading experience that is deep and fulfilling. David Menefee draws upon his dynamic knowledge of the occult, and his intuitive nature to create an alternative method in how to relate to "the Demons" we can all face in our lifetime. Character Angela is a Psych nurse for a Mental health hospital in San Francisco. She presents her alternative treatment plan to treat her patients psychosis, to the hopspital’s funders and heads of research. They grant her the opportunity to run her clinical trials to prove the alternative treatment plan will be successful. At the time of the trials, Angela's past comes to haunt her. She is forced to rekindle with her gypsy heritage, and mystical talents to treat her patient Cassandra with an even more alternative treatment than planned. Angela uses her mind walking powers to enter “the meadow” to face the fears, and entities that enter the sub conscience of her patients. Will she be able to help her past life lover from the clutches of the Soul Thief that is trying to destroy her? Will her grandfather make if back from the other side?

The story reminded me of the importance of being true to myself, of facing my demons with courage, and trusting in the bigger picture; that everything happens for a reason.

The read will keep you on your toes, and I am waiting for the second book “The god of battles," to be released on April 14th, 2015 so I can start the read!

5.0 out of 5 stars A great read! 15 July 2014
By B. Cormack - Published on Amazon.com

David Menefee has made a great debut with "The Soul Thief", the first in a new series of mystery thrillers with a supernatural twist. His protagonist has an uneasy foot in two very different worlds, her profession of psychiatry and her Gypsy heritage of healing. Dr. Angela Cooper does her best to remain rational in the face of a growing array of strange events and coincidences, which conspire to lead her inexorably back to her Romany roots. Menefee sympathetically portrays a strong, capable woman who is dedicated to her practice and to helping her patients, accurately portraying the stresses and demands of modern professional life. We feel her frustration as she struggles with the conflicts aroused by the stormy relationship with her grandfather, a Romany chovihano, himself struggling with alcoholism. Menefee gives us a new and most interesting twist on what may be called variously spirit walking, out of body experiences, spiritual healing, dream walking: a psychic practice or ability with which Dr. Cooper is 'gifted' and which her grandfather trained her to use. At the risk of losing her professional credentials and her career, Dr. Cooper re-enters the world of the chovihani in order to heal a special patient and make restitution for an earlier effort that went terribly awry. Menefee skillfully depicts the wonderful potential and terror of this kind of psychic work, in a thoroughly believable story set in San Francisco. Events reach a crescendo as Dr. 'Angel' Cooper confronts a shadowy nemesis wreaking havoc in both worlds, and the story concludes with resolutions that both satisfy and leave room for further adventures. The only question is, when will the next book be available?

The Soul Thief is a thrilling suspenseful story filled with paranormal elements. Dr. Angela Cooper is a psychiatrist. But, she is also a dream walker. After a horrible accident that claimed all but one member of the Grey family, Angela has vowed not to use her abilities ever again. However, Cassandra Grey shows up at the facility where Angela works and she must use her abilities to help treat the only surviving member of the Grey family.
The author weaves a tale of despair, suspense, while keeping the main characters likeable. Angela’s ability to live in both the real and dream worlds creates so much conflict, giving the reader a reason to not put the book down. I know that I did not want to stop reading until I got to the end because so much was going on, but never too much to make me feel overwhelmed by the details.
I have never heard of this author before, but you can bet I’ll be waiting for more from him. His talent for writing is something to keep an eye on!

I wasn't sure what to expect when I picked up this book, but was happy to find that it quickly drew me into the characters and story line. I found myself putting off other things that I should have been doing in order to find out what happened next. The book did a great job portraying an alternate reality that was both terrifying and exciting, setting the stage for a great story. The poetry at the beginning of each chapter was beautiful, providing additional insight into one of the main characters and the crazy tumultuous reality that she was living. I'd highly recommend this book!
