About the Author
Bethany Hamilton: Bethany has become a source of inspiration to millions through her story of determination, faith and hope. In 2003, Bethany lost her left arm while surfing to a 14-foot tiger shark. Rather than let her career as a rising surf star come crashing down, Bethany miraculously returned to the water one month after the attack, a year later won her first National title, and has since realized her dream of surfing professionally. Her unbelievably positive attitude fascinated the world, and her story has been told in an autobiography and later adapted to the 2011 film, Soul Surfer. Bethany and her husband, Adam Dirks, are involved in many charitable efforts, including Friends of Bethany, which she and her family created to help shark attack survivors, traumatic amputees, and serves to inspire others through her life story. Now as a professional surfer, motivational speaker, and healthy lifestyle advocate, Bethany continues to touch and inspire lives globally.
Sheryl Berk is a "New York Times" bestselling author several times over. "Soul Surfer", her #1 bestseller with Bethany Hamilton, was made into a major motion picture.
Rick Bundschuh is a surfer, writer, and cartoonist, and serves as one of the pastors at Kauai Christian Fellowship. He makes his home in Kalaheo, Hawaii, along with his wife, Lauren, their four kids, a weenie dog, and a quiver of surfboards. --This text refers to an out of print or unavailable edition of this title.

This book seems to be Bethany all over. By that I mean, she's a courageous, positive thinker, characterized by her Christian faith, but she has a degree of reserve which means it's hard to truly see what she's thinking throughout the book. That's not a criticism. I respect that, being reserved and a 'private person' myself. But it's unusual for an autobiography to be co-written by someone who doesn't like talking about herself.
I was thinking her books would be more like those of Joni Eareckson Tada - with deep insight about how her injury affects her life, her inner feelings, frustrations and reactions, worked through to result in ultimate contentment and peace with God - notwithstanding that there are always going to be tests and problems that come up day-to-day. But Bethany's only 14 or 15 when she writes this, I suspect that in many ways she hasn't truly found who she is or wants to be in life yet, so she writes very much with a consciousness that shows she's not really used to life in the limelight yet.
This book is mainly about her day-to-day life, the shark attack, and what happened to her afterwards. There is a section talking about her faith in God and how He's helped her through - this isn't Bible-bashing, it's who she is! She wouldn't be the pro surfer she is today if God hadn't taken her in hand and given her the courage and perseverance to carry on.Read more ›
I'd also recommend watching the film "Soul Surfer" - it is stunning and beautiful to watch and has that feel-good factor.
As a parent of an 11 yr old elite gymnast I find it really hard to find books that relate and encourage her. This is a true tale that inspires us all. Bethany expresses her own faith with level headed maturity without pressure. she is just herself and certain of her faith. do not avoid this book in fear of being Bible-bashed because it won't happen!
Bethany was 13 yrs old when the incident happened but was back on her board in less than a month. Much of sport is about overcoming adversities for children yet there is not much material to encourage and inspire them. This does both and more.
As a youth worker Soul Surfer is loaded with material to use.
