Although this is the personal account of a fourteen year old girl's experience of tragically losing her arm in a shark attack while surfing, and her subsequent fight back to health, fitness and surfing again, it should not by any means be categorised as a "children's book". The book is ghost written by a professional writer, and reads well and quickly. Bethany's courage and determination are an inspiration to anyone of any age. Her deep Christian faith, and that of her family as she describes their encouragement and support, are also inspirational. A book to be enjoyed at the time, and remembered long afterwards.

This book is well written for children to understand. I'm 10 years old and I have just learnt to surf, this book really inspires me to get better at surfing. It also taught me to follow my dreams, no matter what happens. Believe in yourself and you can make them come true. Bethany Hamilton is now my heroine!!

Bethany Hamilton writes in a warm, thoughtful and engaging way about how she was able to come to terms with the traumatic loss of her left arm following a shark attack. She describes her love of surfing, and how she was eventually able to return to the sport through the support of her family and friends, and her strong belief in God. An encouraging and inspiring read.

Bethany Hamilton was a girl growing up on Kauai, Hawaii, training to be a professional surfer - until one day, a horrific shark attack nearly cost her her life. With impressive courage and exemplary faith in God, she overcame this injury to become a pro surfer in her own right.

This book seems to be Bethany all over. By that I mean, she's a courageous, positive thinker, characterized by her Christian faith, but she has a degree of reserve which means it's hard to truly see what she's thinking throughout the book. That's not a criticism. I respect that, being reserved and a 'private person' myself. But it's unusual for an autobiography to be co-written by someone who doesn't like talking about herself.

I was thinking her books would be more like those of Joni Eareckson Tada - with deep insight about how her injury affects her life, her inner feelings, frustrations and reactions, worked through to result in ultimate contentment and peace with God - notwithstanding that there are always going to be tests and problems that come up day-to-day. But Bethany's only 14 or 15 when she writes this, I suspect that in many ways she hasn't truly found who she is or wants to be in life yet, so she writes very much with a consciousness that shows she's not really used to life in the limelight yet.

This book is mainly about her day-to-day life, the shark attack, and what happened to her afterwards. There is a section talking about her faith in God and how He's helped her through - this isn't Bible-bashing, it's who she is! She wouldn't be the pro surfer she is today if God hadn't taken her in hand and given her the courage and perseverance to carry on.

I found this book so inspiring and gave me a much needed boost as I'm currently struggling with my health at the moment. This girl is unbelievable and you can't help but admire her and feel inspired by her courage and positive outlook on life.
I'd also recommend watching the film "Soul Surfer" - it is stunning and beautiful to watch and has that feel-good factor.

It's a pretty good book. It brings a bit of faith in you. Not necessarily religious faith, but just faith in general. If you're going through something and you feel like you won't ever get to the other end of the tunnel, this book can help you get more hopeful. There's one super cute line that's always stuck with me while she was talking about how she usually wears flip-flops: "YOU try tying your shoes with one hand" I really laughed at that! :D

A true 'can't put it down' read. There is no gore or any part that induces nightmares. the imfamous shark attack is recounted in small portions throughout the story. this can safely be read by a mature 8yr old and is mature enough to engage older teens. It wouldn't harm to read it first before your child as you will be blown away by her courage, aswell as answer any of your childs questions.
As a parent of an 11 yr old elite gymnast I find it really hard to find books that relate and encourage her. This is a true tale that inspires us all. Bethany expresses her own faith with level headed maturity without pressure. she is just herself and certain of her faith. do not avoid this book in fear of being Bible-bashed because it won't happen!
Bethany was 13 yrs old when the incident happened but was back on her board in less than a month. Much of sport is about overcoming adversities for children yet there is not much material to encourage and inspire them. This does both and more.
As a youth worker Soul Surfer is loaded with material to use.

I saw the movie and was so impressed with the way Bethany Hamilton coped with the shark attack, I had to get the book (and I don't normally read books). She is an amazing girl. A must read book for anyone.
