Top Customer Reviews
Soul Lifter is at one level the unfolding of the career of a serial killer; his heinous crimes stumbled on and exposed by a tired and confused journalist on a Hull local paper. But there is more! The killings are influenced, perhaps motivated by, African mysticism. A shamanistic ritual gone wrong seems to have set off the path to carnage.
And all the time, a sinister figure observes and influences events.
Murphy's characters are well drawn. There is no superman, or flawed genius here. They struggle to understand what is going on around them as they grapple with the more mundane concerns of day to day life.
The breathtaking climax is a dramatic showdown in a derelict, industrial wasteland. But the echoes of the African rain forest remain. The crimes are solved, but mysteries remain to be explained.
I hope we can look forward to further journeys into darkness with Murphy after this brilliant start.
I liked the depth to the characters, especially the main character who was my kind of hero, a tortured soul himself. The story is interesting and the way it unfolds as you progress through the book is compelling.
I would recommend this book and I look forward to reading a sequel in the future.
