I was happily reading through this book, believing I was learning a few things, when I reached p.120 where the book states you must hit the £1 million jackpot to get any return on NS&I's Premium Bonds. The author clearly thinks there is only one prize of £1 million each month but this is wrong. There are lots of prizes each month from £25-£500,000 as well as the £1 million jackpot. Then later the author claims that the number of qualifying years a person needs to claim a full UK state pension will soon be going up to 44 years for men and women. Actually it's set to come down to 30 years for men and women. After this I lost any confidence in anything I read so I stopped reading the book. But before this I was already disappointed that there was no clear explaination of how APR is calculated for savings or loans and no worked examples of anything of this sort. Also, most of the info in this book can be found online already and it should be up to date and accurate - which this book isn't.

For someone who hated opening bank statements, this book was a real eye opener. It covers only the basics of personal finance and is a brilliant starting point for lay people like myself. After reading through it, I am now able to structure my spending and understand the importance of saving/raising extra capital for the future. It has helped me think clearly about my future, financial goals and how to achieve them. It has only recently dawned on me how much unnecessary interest I've been paying credit card companies! Now, I have cleared it all off, but still be able to take advantage of the benefits of having a credit card without paying enormous amounts of interest. It also covers savings and investment products, as well very useful tips on spending wisely - all common sense one might argue, but all too lacking in most people. Highly recommended for people who have no control of their finances, but you'll require a more advance book for complex financial securities.

Most books I end up getting rid of once read. Not this book! Not all chapters may be relevant to all readers, but this is the kind of book where you can dip in and out of it when sections become relevant. A really helpful and simple book - would recommend to anyone who needs to "sort out" their finances!
